Experiment with it, mix and match the different skill trees to do what you want with it; the elite spec synergizes well with basically anything.
I've heard there are no "true" tanks in GW2 because the role isn't really needed for someone to keep a bosses attention and take the damage.
The holy trinity generally isn't a thing, but there are some raids where the boss will focus the person with the highest Toughness stat, which makes them the tank for that encounter. Outside of raids though, you're right there isn't a dedicated tank role, you are largely responsible for avoiding damage yourself through movement and dodging. In other harder missions a healer of some kind is generally all you need to keep people up if they are playing well enough.
In that case then I think I would like some kind of Offensive Support build for Firebrand. Something that deals good damage (Condition, specifically) and provides good support via buffs and secondary/assist healing, maybe with some CC options.
Axe/Torch is what I'm looking at currently. And I'm playing Charr, because apparently Charrdian is a meme.
