Can you just skip to the latest expansion?
Or what do you miss when you don't buy the other ones?

Yes you can skip, but you miss all the rest. So most of the mounts, the story, etc.
There's no reason to skip to the end though, all areas of the game are still populated. This isn't WoW where only the latest expansion has any players. You are far better off buying the complete pack. The latest expansions are also some of the lowest points of the game. So don't skip the highs of Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire and Living seasons 3 and 4 and ice brood saga.

Expansions can be done in any order.

Each has their own progression.

As for what you miss? Elite Specializations is the biggest one, but you'll also lose out on some mounts, and quite a few Masteries.

What do you miss if you only buy the latest expansion?
About 80% of the game's content, including, but not only, story, a large number of open world zones, some of the most popular/profitable meta events, mounts, most of the Masteries (progression system after max level), Elite Specializations (i.e. the strongest builds in the game, needed if you want to be effective in competitive modes) and some more...

As alluded to before, the game is rather evenly populated in all areas, I think mainly due to the horizontal progression system. Practically no content turns irrelevant.

A LOT! <What everybody else said.>

To directly address the suspected assumption that this question is coming from:
This game doesn't function like, e.g., World of Warcraft, where the release of a new expansion comes with a level cap increase some new power grind and the old zones become irrelevant, and everybody is in the new zones only.

I mean my reason would be that i dont have the money for all expansions 😂 So i can either buy the early expansions and do content pretty much alone or join everyone else in the latest one.

It seems like you still didn't fully understand us. That's not how it works.
You won't be "pretty much alone" in the early expansions. New players and veterans alone continue to play the meta events in old zones.

Furthermore, the the earlier expansions are far more impactful when it comes to features, build diversity through elite specializations, diverse mounts and other movement tools etc.

Also, it's of course the continuation of the free game's story, with story/narrative/lore being a big part of this game.
What Hefutoxin writes about the expansions is mechanically true; you can play them independently, they have their own progression, but …
that's like saying you can read each book in any order.
You could start with book five of A Song of Ice and Fire, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings … but why would you do that?

If you can afford the 50 bucks for the Elder Dragon Saga Complete Collection, get that. It might be 100 bucks off sale now, but if you add up what its contents cost on release, its actual value is a lot higher. The base game and each of the expansions cost around 50 bucks each and the living world now costs the same amount again. Sure, the value of an expansion diminished with age, but I'd argue not by a terrible lot die to the design of this game.

Newer expansions aren't discounted by a significant amount anyway at the moment, so no hurry there.

It's really not. I've played off an on since launch. I couldn't tell you what was going on, even in the latest expansion. It's neither compelling nor memorable.

Think of them as "content packs" instead of MMO expansions. People who have the newest expansion go back to previous ones to continue unlocking things and/or they enjoy the content in those expansions more. Outside of being the newest, the last two expansions haven't had much reason for people to stick around.

You miss elite specializations if you get Janthir Wilds or Secrets of the Obscure only. And that's a pretty important part of the game nowadays. Many people will not take you into instanced pve group play without an elite specialization inserted into your build, so if your goal is to eventually do more difficult content, you should get the first 3 expansions & the living world season content while it's cheap on sale right now.

GW2 is not FFXIV where a majority of content becomes effectively dead after its patch cycle runs its course. Expansion content in GW2 provides more horizontal upgrades for your account in the form of masteries. These improve aspects of your account (cross-character progression) such as the ability to automatically loot defeated enemies, more capable mounts, and more efficient play.

Heart of Thorns remains relevant even today for many reasons:
-Part of the "Return to" achievement line which ends with a legendary item reward
-Some of the more profitable areas in the game to this day (you'll see people run Auric Basin a lot for shiny baubles to sell)
-There are Janthir Wilds areas where usage of masteries from HoT will save you a lot of time, as well as other expansions
-It's incredibly easy to gear up alternate characters for cheap via bladed armor pieces which are stat-selectable.
-Creation of legendary weapons requires enthusiastic participation in the expansion content, and unlike generation 1 legendary weapons, they're not sellable once completed.

If you are strapped for cash, I would highly recommend you start with the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle, by far the best content per price and they offer many things that remain relevant today. Just echoing what others have said and giving more explanation, old expansions are not dead, in large part because the level cap for GW2 has literally never been raised. Level 80 was the level cap a decade ago and it still is now, so literally all content released after the base game is equally relevant for getting gear and materials.

You may see a large number in the hundreds where people's level should be, that is the "mastery level" of level 80 characters. Instead of level cap increases, xp earned by max level characters can go torwards Masteries, which are passive account wide bonuses. For example, a base-game mastery allows you to auto-loot enemies, a Heart of Thorns mastery allows you to use a glider to fly across gaps and save yourself from falls, and Path of Fire masteries allow you to use mounts to ride around faster and traverse terrain in different ways.

The older expansions are less played of course, as people have gotten what they want from them and moved on, but there are still new players, old players with new characters, and players who are looking to complete achievements, farm xp or gold, or complete daily or weekly rotating challenges. For example, there is sometimes things like a weekly that says "Complete ten events in the Heart of Maguuma", which is the area Heart of Thorns takes place in, which will significantly boost the population of those maps during that week. Also, with the Megaserver system, where players aren't divided by server selection so all players in each region (NA or EU) are grouped together and instances are created and dissolved automatically based on population, it is highly likely you will find at least some people playing on any given map at any given time.

I agree, buying this pair of DLC really does give you an incredible amount of content for one price. It's worth it just to unlock mounts. The traversal abilities of the different mounts are absolutely crucial to fully explore all areas of each zone. Plus the general boost to quality of life because you can get from place to place faster, allowing you to complete missions faster.

Just be aware that buying the Expansion Starter Pack - GW2: Heart of Thorns™ and Path of Fire™ will lock you out of ever buying the GW2: ELDER DRAGON SAGA—COMPLETE COLLECTION on Steam, which means that you'll have to buy End of Dragons and the Living World seasons separately if you want those. There's no cheaper overall option to get all the content of the first decade of GW2 but at a someone steep upfront cost, in absolute terms.

Outside of any sales, Ultimate Editions that come with 4000 gems would be a good option for that, but those cost 50 bucks more than the standard edition, so unless your finances relax in the near future, not the greatest option either.
Once you have an unlocked account from activating any expansion, you can also use gold to gem conversion to farm the gems for Living World instead, but that does take time and dedication. When they're not on sale, the Living World seasons cost 4160 gems. Those would cost ~2000 gold coins, which is a lot, but you could buy the seasons as you go.

My ideal recommendation would be. Buy Hearth of Thorns, and buy Path and fire. Those 2 expansions added a lot of new stuff to your arsenal and character. It probably would be very frustrating as a new player playing the latest content without having all these new features. Combined with End of dragons these 3 expansions qualify in my eyes as real big expansions with the sheer amount of new zones, story and features they bring. End of dragons being the one that doesnt really ad much required new stuff to your character that you really need to enjoy the latest Janthir zones.

After these 3 big expansions they changed the way of making content and went down the route of making smaller expansion with less new features and smaller new maps so they can make episodes release them after 3 a 4months instead of releasing one big erxpansion every 2 to 3 years.

Once you finished these you can always decide later to pick up end of dragons, or go straight nto to the latest expansion Janthir Wilds (atm). Secrets of the obscure can even be skipped if you really want to imo.

You can also just use the launcher from arenanet gw2 site itself much easier imo. Best thing about is that you can add game licenses to your account when ever you find a sale somewhere, not needing to wait for steam sales. Be aware tho, steam account and arena accounts are different so you must chose 1 to buy everything on, You cant mix both purchases to one account.
