Doing map completion is mostly an early game task that you do while leveling up. While obviously all new maps from expansions and Living World also can be explored, not all of them have hearts and they in general are also a lot more dense, meaning they have much more interesting content to offer than the base game maps.
In general the expansion maps are quite different from the core tyria maps, if you want a first look of them you should get to lvl 80 and go to the 2 Living World season 2 maps: Dry Top and the Silverwastes, which are part of the free core game.
Also, as a free2play player you also can get access to dungeons and fractals, which are instanced group content (though dungeons are mostly abandoned so it takes a while to find a group) though fractals require lvl 80 and dungeons ... are hard to do with sub lvl 80, so while you can probably already do the story paths inside them earlier, for the exploration paths you probably should also wait until lvl 80.
Btw, if you want some more interesting events like world bosses, there are quite many of them in the core game. They might be a nice change of pace compared to most other events where barely any players show up. Here's a link to their schedule. Though some bosses might be in too high leveled areas. It's nicely grouped by core tyria, the expansions and Living World chapters.

-Do Personal quests, I hear the story gets better after 80
- Explore the zones, hearts, events, meta's and world bosses (look up the LFG panel)
- Do dungeons, story mode difficulty for example
- Once you get to 80 I think each expansions has a leading story
- Look in your story journal, game has a bundle of story DLC called Living World
(Personally though, I really enjoy the hearts, events and map exploration)
*Maybe go out of your way and read up on the lore on gw2 wiki
There are a lot this game offers!
Early in the game might be a little boring to you since it is about advancing to higher level maps as you level up, but you can attend some world boss events that are suitable to your level range (Look up "Event timer gw2" and there is a schedule you can follow)
Once you hit level 80, things become so much more interesting, you can do fractals (if you do not have the gold to get agony resistance for higher level fractals, you can still tag along doing the lower tier ones! Completing daily fractals is also a good way to earn some extra gold!)
PVE wise, silverwastes has a fun early on meta. I am not a fan of Dry Top.
As for HoT maps, I like the meta in Auric Basin and Tangled Depths. Dragon Stand is not bad too.
I personally enjoy HoT meta more than the ones that got released later. Hence I always go back to those maps just for fun.
Aside from dungeons, there are also multiple raids you can try later on!
After hitting level 80, and getting the desirable gears, try out World vs. World!
You can tag along with the commander tags, or form a roaming group with your guildmates/friends.
Edge of the Mist (Another battlefield) is not as active as it used to be anymore, at least to my server. But World is World is probably the end game content that is keeping me going nowadays.
Have fun!
