To fully enjoy?
Yeah, it's good to have all content in the long run
You are going to want it most likely, if you end up liking the game
First of all you can just play the base game for free (with some restrictions)
While you do you can wait for the next steam sale
That would be my advice

how's the population tho? they say most of the players are not playing on steam. is it the same server?

Steam players play together with everyone else

Games population is still strong
Game was very big on launch (2012) but the big player boom went down
Since then it's had a very stable playerbase pretty much
Most likely thing to "kill" the game would be the rumored Guild Wars 3
But even if that happens, it would most likely be many years in the future
The game has megaservers. So game feels very alive
There's some very dedicated Guild Wars 2 haters that visit this steam forum all the time, they will probably come in here at one point telling you just how dead the game is
My advice, don't take my or their word for it
Download the game and try it for free :)
Hope you have fun with the game

Very high population. I'm online now if you need a tour and are in NA

i literally can not get a grip with the camera im struggling to even walk. how do i fix this im almost constantly on a fixed point while moving and the whole backing up like a vehicle has me beat. its the only thing literally killing the game for me and im only 2 minutes in.

You can turn on "action camera", this should let you run in all directions al full speed and is a lot more intuitive to use. I don't know what the default button is, so you would have to check in the keybinding section. The game plays more like a third-person shooter that way.

Without using action camera, you can also just hold in right mouse button while running
Thiis will also enable the camera to move with your mouse movement

I'm not 100% sure if I understand you correctly, but the thing you are looking for should be holding down the right mouse button, which allows you to freely control the camera with your mouse. You can also do the same with the left mouse button, but that one would only move the camera, without changing your characters moving direction, so great for looking around while constantly moving into the same direction, while the right mouse button is more for also controlling in which direction you're moving.

I have action camera toggle on/off bound to my middle mouse button btw
I mostly play with action camera, but sometimes you want to be able to target enemies with your mouse
Lots of options available, so try and see what works for you
Some classes with lots of ground targeting, it's probably better to not use action camera ... But depends how much you care
There's options to tweak, like enemies you aim at get targeted automatically with those skills, but not as efficent
But if you are not into high level competetive endgame content, but just chill PVE, then just play whatever feels the most fun to you

It plays well on STEAM Deck and fits perfectly with the control options on the Steamdeck. Still, it's a PC game so you're better off just playing it on PC most of the time.

Base game is really good. Dungeons are abandoned as a concept and you can safely play this game without ever doing a dungeon. You won't miss anything.

The whole game is about exploration and the story it tells. Each class is fun to play and the animations are top notch and the open world/instanced large map design works really well here. WoW did something similar with Sharding but the two are implemented very different from one another. Where modern WoW the game world feels empty and dead in GW2 the world is alive and has lots to do with lots of people all over the map.

Expansions: They released in this order:

1. Heart of Thorns
2. Path of Fire
3. End of Dragons
4. Secrets of the Obscure
5. Seasons - These are the in between "free" content to build up toward each expansion.

Which ones are good?

1. Heart of Thorns
Very hard to get into but a very good expansion to come back to. You'll also get a lot of gold for this - it's still very popular and constantly has people playing it and grinding the events in pretty much every area.

It also introduces gliders which are useful and can be used anywhere.

2. Path of Fire
Great expansion. The mounts really add a lot to the game and impact the base game without taking away from the original vision of the game and how you explore the game world(for the most part). If you buy Path of Fire and don't skip straight into it I believe you can still unlock mounts for the base game very early on.

The story is good, characters are forgettable for the most part but the story is decent. Unlocking mounts is fun and exploring the map is great too. Revisits some GW1 iconic areas and does it quite well also.

3. End of Dragons
Very bad expansion. Eastern themed, adds boats and fishing. You can fish without the expansion but I don't think you can get the boats without them - perhaps free versions in specific spots you can access.

Very bad story, felt unfinished and the zones were a clear step BACK in quality and visuals. The very last map area is not tied to story at all. Boss fights in some instances can take 15 minutes to beat and are incredibly boring. I, personally, did not enjoy this expansion at all and I felt zero reason to go back to this area regardless of whether or not I enjoyed the theme.

4. Secrets of the Obscure
Not played it but people's reception to it are very mixed. It's only 25 bucks so it might be worth looking into when you've played around with the other expansions and still enjoy the game. At the time of release you weren't getting the full content of the expansion; it was going to be drip fed to the players from what I recall. It may be fully released now but I never kept up with it.

5. Seasons
The in between "Seasons" are available but you have to pay extra for them if you weren't around when they dropped. I think they have in-game bundles you can buy that have entire seasons for like 10 bucks.

They also offer rewards for completing challenges such as cosmetics, mastery points and what not. If you like the game when you get into it go ahead and buy them but be warned: They get very bad and really poorly written(Even though in general the writing isn't stellar in GW2) with the newer seasons and some of the fights go on for far too long - bring a friend!

Of the seasons the Living World Season 2, 3 and 4 are pretty good. Season 1 was re-released(Previously unable to play it because season 1 changed the game world significantly).

I would say play the base game first then Heart of Thorns and then Path of Fire to get a real feel for how the game played on launch. End of Dragons is bad, really bad but if you like the game again, you may as well. There is a wealth of content in all the expansions anyway.

Secrets of the Obscure may be better now but for 25 bucks and it's near completion it's likely more worthwhile now than on launch.

Absolutely, I started playing 3 weeks ago and it is one of the best mmos I have ever played besides old school runescape.

It is very complicated to find anyone to play with, the leveling phase is alright but it feels like a solo game

Decided to go ahead and tryout GW2.

Server listing, wow just wow that is a lot of servers. Chose the NA list and green (low pop) and made a Norn Ranger.

Using search online did not turn up any thing related to Pacific/Mountain Timezone NA servers.

Still in the tutorial section of the game, learning the ropes. Wondering if using the wrong pet, Bear is not fast enough, by time bear gets to target the target is already dead.

Playing as Free To Play the base game.

Region mostly matters
Server choice is just for WvW (open world pvp mode where servers fight against eachother)
In other parts of the game, everyone on same region play together
And soon server will not matter for WvW either (at least I think that's the plan)

Don't worry about your pet
You can unlock many pets as ranger
You're not stuck with the bear
