wait on a sale and buy entire saga (Elder Dragon Saga—Complete Collection)
https://buy.guildwars2.com/en-us/complete-collection
It has evverything instead Secrets of the Obscure
There you can farm easily ascended trinkets (rings, amulets, ...)
For me my worst purchase is the last : secrets of the obscure.
I have enjoyed SotO personally. :)
Having all Elite spec locked weapons on same class been nice (for more build freedom) and now the new weapon for each class.
And yes, i have even enjoyed the maps and gameplay of SotO. Still, before that i'd buy (and play) all other stuff. It has enough comments and lore stuff about the earlier story for any lore Andy or Candy (girl andy lmao) to appreciate when done stuff already so you know what the character is talking about in some parts of the story there.
Is it FF14 Shadowbringers or Endwalker tier writing? Not exactly, but also not totally bad. More like chill and keeps enough engaged to wanna play the next story part always when patch hits to finish, then do all the extra stuff it gives, achievements and so on. It's chill and fun playing what comes to story. "Easy to play as entertainment", especially when hanging around with friends doing events/metas/random stuff.
I feel like SotO was their "fresh start" after Dragon Saga, a bit like FF14 will have soon Dawntrail be their fresh start after the whole 10 years of Hydaelyn & Ascians story arc that came to finish in Endwalker and now they starting something new. A fully new story arc in distant lands. Good year to be MMO player, even if not much new mmo games, but many of these oldies bring FUN (most important thing) new content this year. Good fur us players, got bit of everything for every taste.
I have started to love GW2 as much as i love FF14, a miracle in itself. So i have became 2 mmo player, sharing gaming time between the two, switching weekly what gets more. :D
So i am cautiously hyped for what comes after SotO, prolly after summer.
If you start with Path of Fire, you are playing the story out of order.
If only goal is to gain mounts quickly, then EoD (raptor, springer, turtle) and SOTO (skyscale, raptor) is valid options as well.
SOTO you gain skyscale (and much easier than in season 4)
EoD probably worst option if you're just after mounts. But I think unlock is just speaking to an NPC though, so very quick option (except for turtle)
But ofc raptor also unlocked at low level now if you own expansions. Not sure if it counts for any expansion that has raptor.
PoF has the most fun way of unlocking the mounts though
I think your enjoyment of PoF will be much worse if you go into it with mounts already unlocked.
I would reccommend playing the expansions in order, if you want to experience it how the game was designed to be played
But really up to the individual
If unlocking mounts is high priority, then I would probably do SOTO first and unlock the skyscale as it's the best all around mount
But then again, you would possibly get less enjoyments out of a lot of content
Not many use springer ever again after unlocking skyscale, except for the CC attack it has.
And this go not just for mounts.
Core was designed with no mounts. You are kind of "cheating" the content by having mounts.
HoT was desgined with no mounts, but glider and stuff like jumping mushrooms to traverse the enviroment.
Again, you are kind of "cheating" by having mounts unlocked.
Guild Wars 2 expansions are designed like Metroidvania games. Meaning, the progression in the game depends on unlocking new tools to overcome challenges.
If you have a skyscale as an example, you are enabling yourself to skip a lot of these things
Some will care, some won't
So really up to the individual as I mentioned already
There's ofc also other considerations than mounts, like elite specs etc
I don't want to know if OP plays GW2 expansions out of order, I did the same mistake back when it only had HoT expansion and I ended up playing again cause I didn't know what was happening or why the world is changing around me (this time in order with all the expansions).
If OP is going to question everything later he/she did itself a oopsie for example: why are there Dragons as World Bosses? Why is there a big ass crater on the half of the map? Why some of the areas are closed to enter (story only areas)?
Yeah the flying has sort of been the emphasized (right english word? I just woke up lol..) thing in SotO for the map designs and even events/bosses sort of are about it and of course there was new Masteries for it.
I doubt they recycle that in next expansion. And i agree, flight restrictions would be actually nice in some maps of it. Some people would obviously complain about it since they are so addicted to flying everywhere, even if 10 meters to pick a resource node, they get on their skyscale lmao.
I'm weird, i use my Warclaw (from WvW) even most often in pve maps. :D It's not fast, it does not jump far or high, but it's chill, and i spend so much time in WvW that he is my good boy and we go everywhere together. ^^ Using a fancy skin with nice colors that fit my each characters fashion tho. :D I enjoy taking my time on maps, just chilling and riding around doing events, i am not about maximized speed on farming or traveling. I'd actually like regular (and fancy) horse skins for my Warclaw (or for Raptor if not for Warclaw), would be chill to ride horse in the pretty places Anet has done for us to explore. :)
If i have to guess things about next expansion, i'd guess it's a big island mass or new continent with new type of assets and animals and i'd say they will add maybe a new mount type, or expand on skiffs/boats. Would be cool to have more boats and functions for them, like actual sailing on open seas with sea encounter/combats. One can dream. ^^
