Once you turn on your controller, click the controller icon on the game's library page, or from the overlay menu (you do need the overlay enabled) to open the Steam Input configuration.
Steam will hide the controller button and menu options until it sees an active controller. So don't forget to turn it on first.
Edit - enabling action cam helps immensely
And yeah, almost any controller config is going to assume you're using action cam.
If you haven't, maybe set the options so ground targets stop at max range ("Lock Ground Target at Maximum Skill Range"), and so you press to target and release to cast ("Fast with Range Indicator").
Not that you can easily aim them with the controller to begin with. I may be able to correct this issue by trying out some different controller profiles and in game settings, but so far I have not succeeded.
It's not ideal, but that's just the nature of the beast playing a game with move, camera, and 20 fighting keys.
