Can i use my old Guildwars 2 ArenaNet account ?

i havent played since 2016 was wondering if i can use steam to access my old Arena Net account as im reluctant to start from scratch.

It's safer to just ignore the Steam version of GW2 and keep using their usual launcher for playing GW2. You can even put the normal GW2 launcher as an external program into Steam if you want to launch it via Steam. Using the Steam GW2 version doesn't really give you any benefits if you already have an old account. Especially since it can lead to the trap of thinking that you can buy anything for your old account here on Steam, which isn't possible as all purchases made here on Steam always go to your newely created Steam GW2 account.

I’ve been trying to reinstall it on disk but it gave me an error. I’m bummed out about it, I’m thinking I have to download it on steam and if I do is it possible to retrieve my old account on it ?

I'd recommend you check your hardware; only time I've ever had the GW2 launcher throw errors at me more than once was back when my previous SSD was dying. It's unlikely that the Steam version would work if the independent client doesn't.

Edit: Oh, you meant an old school DVD install... ouch.

Why not just go to the anet website and grab the installer?

Nico already gave you a perfectly elaborate answer.

Just use the official GW2 client to launch your game and add a link to Steam if you desperately want to be able to launch it via Steam. It won't make it a Steam account, mind you.

In case your old client is faulty (or you still have the 32-bit version, which is no longer supported), just redownload the client here:

5 years ago the Steam GW2 account didn't yet exist. They certainly don't merge any Steam GW2 accounts with regular GW2 accounts.

That's sad. An old ArenaNet account is much nicer. Downloading the game from https://account.arena.net/welcome isn't hard to do.

Bleh i ended up installing my old account dont wannt start from scratch. Plus ill just add it as a non steam game.

To clarify what I ment, I had pre order special edition. They merged all my "special" stuff to my new acc. So you might wanna try support, they are great.
