It is. And while some older content isnt as active as it was in the early years, most of it is still pretty relevant since (different from most other MMOs) old expansions dont get "discarded" once a new one releases.
Different. And thats the main point you should know beforehand: GW2 does quiet a few things different compared to other MMOs which, depending on your own preference, could make or break your experience with it. To elaborate:
- It has no gear-treadmill, a piece of gear you got 3 years ago will be as strong / usefull today as it was back then.
- Not many raids / dungeons, instead we have strikes and fractals, which (at least in my opinion) are pretty much just a smaller version of raids / dungeons with less bosses. But "instanced content" isnt the main focus of the game.
- Most of the game / endgame is focussed on events in the open world you can join on the fly. Other games have followed up over the years, but i still think GW2s open world events / bossfights are the best in the genre. Events have some downsides tho: They are bound to certain times, meaning you cant start them whenever you want. Depending on the ammount of players taking part, they can also fail (which does happen during slower times, like in the middle of the night).
- Another big part of the game is completing collections / achievements. Pretty much all of them are account-wide, so you wont lose anything if you decide to make a new character.
- PVP can be hit or miss, pretty much like with every other game. Tho i vastly prefer the PVE content, so my experience in PVP outside of world vs world (large scale group PVP) is rather limited.
- Mounts are a feature of the 2nd expansion, so both the core game and the first expansion were designed without them in mind (meaning you will be moving around on foot for the vast majority of your travel time).
- No subscription, but opinions are divided whether or its P2W because you can buy gold with real money. But at the end of the day, everyone has their own definiton of P2W, so that would be up to you.
- While some classes are better at "healing" and "tanking", there is no "holy trinity", so you can pretty much jump into any content with any class. But that doesnt prevent the usual problem of MMOs, aka "people wanting to have certain classes / buffs in their groups because it - in theory - makes them get through the content 2.97% faster / easier".
At the end of the day, its more of a casual "do whatever you want" MMO and less "if you want to get better, you have to do this very specific content" goal oriented compared to other MMOs. I would advise you to just try the free version, complete the story and dip your toes in different kinds of content. And if you still like the game at this point, the "Elder Dragon Saga" bundle DLC would be the best choice. 100$ may seem a bit much at first, but i would say its worth it if you liked the game up to this point, especially compared to how much (or rather "little") "entertainment" the majority of AAA games offer these days.
The last advise i would give you: Try to not go at it with an "it has to work like MMOs i am used to" mindset. As said above, it does quiet a few things different compared to other MMOs, so its best to experience it for what it is. Quiet a few people started of "on the wrong foot" by going at it with the wrong expectations.
Great walk through! i appreciate it a lot, It sounds different then well...every MMO i have played. i'm so use to vertical progression, But i enjoy alot of other games, so trying something like this i might enjoy. gonna give it a shot.
"Dungeons" are TERRIBLE in this game. They did you a big favor.
Fractals and Strikes are ok. Don't waste your time doing a Dungeon.

I agree with the verdict in the video but a lot has changed in the 11 years since it was made, especially end-game content.
If nothing else, it will give the OP a basic idea of what this game offers.
Probably unimportant to most players, but for me, I would've liked to have been able to keep the options to tend to the land, clear out worms, move mugs of brew, etc. There's just a whole list of interactions that the heart quests offers that mostly go bye bye once completed imo.
Just my two cents.
What do you get this from? The definition of a good community is individual but you are a minority with that opinion. Development has increased and they have free updates coming up included in the latest expansion + a new expansion planned for this year and the next. The end-game content called Living World Season 1 is for free (included in base game) and tons of end-game content exist with the expansions. I don't understand what you are talking about, are you trolling or something?
he's right tho and talking about lies and misinformation, you said that HoT expansion brought 10 maps and several fractals which is totally false. please stop using straw man fallacies and red herring arguments.
This game is totally worth it, as any other game it has flaws and bad moments etc but overall is a great mmorpg, just google "best mmorpgs" and enter any random top 10 site, gamesradar, ign, gamespot all that kind of sites and i bet ya gw2 is goin to be among them. Also you can see the vast majority of us in this forum recommend the game.
