they are not essential for it but they are worth the money , especially season 4
For context, Living World Season 1 and 2 are between base game and Heart of Thorns, LWS3 is between HoT and Path of Fire, and LWS4 and 5 are between PoF and End of Dragons.
Living World season 1 is free, so you can just play it once you are done the main story. It doesn't introduce much in terms of gameplay, really just a couple public instances.
Season 2 is paid and doesn't offer very much. The two maps it is tied to are free anyway, so if you don't care too much about the story, you can safely skip this one.
Season 3 is much more substantial, each of the six chapters contains its own map, as well as a mastery track that has skills that are still in use today. These maps are also a great way to earn ascended trinkets.
Season 4 is great for gameplay reasons, not only is it another six maps for each chapter, but it has two mounts and three mastery tracks between them. Easily the most worthwhile single season purchase.
Season 5, which is called "The Icebrood Saga", is a little different. It only has three maps, but also has other kinds of content, like strikes and dragon response missions (group instanced content). Not as good value as seasons 3 and 4, but the portable waystation you can earn here is a big boon for any content it is allowed in.
Season 4 - Rollerbeetle and Skyscale mounts. Dragonfall map has an enjoyable and lucrative Meta.
Season 5 (Icebrood Saga) - Portable Waystation (Mastery), Drizzlewood Coast has an enjoyable Meta.
Season 3 - Easy ascended back piece, trinkets, and aquatic headgear.
I suggest getting them in that order. Ignore season 2.
It's a quick loop you can do daily. Certainly beats whining about how much you hate a video game on the steam forum, multiple times per day.
