Buy the expansions, dlc etc in Anet official site if you already playing with non-steam account.
The "provider portal" trick just works to let you launch the game with anet accounts through steam and add it to library but that it.
Not to mention the very simple fact that there is a difference between "concurrent players" and "total players".
cant use FFXIV steam to connect to non steam client, IDK about ESO,
id bet there is less then a million People* actively playing GW2,
steamcharts are only valid if the game is only playable via steam anyway
people want alot of people playing the MMO so it doesn't feel abandoned, also company's tend to stop making new content if the game has "not enough" players
True, but that applies to playernumbers in general, not Steam exclusive numbers. A player is a player, from ArenaNets POV it doesnt matter whether that player is on Steam or standalone. Yet a certain poster likes to imply that especially Steamnumbers should be pushed in order to show that many people play it on Steam because of reasons that they mostly refuse to elaborate on (or that - in the rare cases they did elaborate - were rather incoherent and boiled down to "because games HAVE to have a big number on Steam!").
And the game has survived just fine for 10 years without Steam and is, as far as i can interpret the earning-call numbers, the biggest source of income for the devs. I doubt we have to worry about it getting shut down / no new content at this point.
