Legendary crafting, with quest or mystic forge?
I think i could use the gift items and a precursor for generation 1 legendaries in the mystic forge. I don't know if that's possible for gen 2 and up.

But the other way is doing the quest, and you need many recipes and look for quest items in many maps, what's the benefit of doing it this way compared to just using the mystic forge?

Gen 2s require the collection quests. Gen1s and 3s do not. Gen1s do have the collection quests but can be skipped if you found or bought a precursor. Gen3s do not have that process and it is a huge grind to make its precursors into a Legendary. It is why gen1s are the most common Legendary. All Legendaries will require the Mystic Forge regardless.

Gen 3 is not too hard to do
I think Gen 1 is most common because it's the first set

Gen 3 has
38 clovers vs 77 clovers
Cantha map completion vs Core Tyria World completion
The 2500 (3500 if you craft the precurser) imperial favor is the only thing that's a bit grindy
Gift of Battle ofc
Rest can pretty much be bought from tp/vendors and crafted. Need about 1000 gold

I can speak of gen 1 and 2 legendary weapons. The two require map completions, core maps for gen 1 and either gift of maguuma (HoT maps) or gift of desert (PoF maps) for gen 2. The "quest" is going to craftsman Hobbs to craft/create the precursor.

Still require the rest to craft the actual legendary weapons.

I crafted gen 1 legendaries before collections
But I remember reading at some point that it actually might be even more expensive to go that route, unless they changed something
So unless you want the journey, I think just crafting the old school route is more efficient

Pretty sure you're right about it being more expensive. I believe the idea was a way for people to craft a precursor and not have to drop gold that they didn't have, to get one. Of course that was back before RIBA and other gold making metas.

but you keep the precursor skin if you do the quest to craft the legendary? and do you get achievement points with the quest?

the way to craft the gen 2 and gen 3 is different compared to gen 1? and what about the kralka or mordremoth legendaries how do you get those? i can only see the aurene weapons in the wiki.

Those are just skins that you can purchase with fragments of prismatic after finishing some collections, but you need to unlock Aurene's weapon skins first.

Gen 3 has variants.
Gen 3 is sort of similar to a black lion weapon set in a way.
They are all similar.
Gen 1 and 2 all the weapons are unique.
Gen 3 all have the same theme
Instead they did 5 variants to the Aurene version (think it's 5 from memory)
I haven't wanted to make other than gen 3 since
Many don't like that they feel less unique, but the variety you get from variants is better imo
You make a Aurene weapon, and then you can unlock variants for it.
It's like 300-350 g value or so for 1 variant + some other currency like clovers and karma
You also have to do a collection (questline) for them

They are
300 g is not too bad on it's own imo
But then you add on 200 spirit shards, 350 k karma, 5 mystic clover
These resources get really scarce when you've done a lot of legendary items

I usually see people using the Mystic Forge for legendary weapons.
Legendary crafting is more of a "completionist thing" imo, but in some cases, it is just "easier" to farm the gold to buy one from the trade hub and train your proficiency for later use.

Easier? Sure. But 800+ gold more expensive

For some people it is just easier to farm gold... so... what is your point exactly?.
