Well, that's nice. When finishing gw2 instead of going to the third, i'll be probably going for gw1. I like good retro games.
It feels like they are planning for lot of years of more Guild Wars 2. Depending on the success of future releases, I wouldn't be surprised to one day celebrate my first character's 20th birthday. (I will, maybe, even have a chance to max out the yearly festival achievement points. If you know, you know.)
Some time last year they looked for staff working on a unrevealed project set in the Guild Wars universe, using UE5 - that is all we actually know and what inspired rumors of a GW3. Personally I don't think that is the project they are working on. Instead I think it is more likely a game with "spin off" character, maybe not even remotely a MMORPG. They could go back to GW1 and make a modern version of it, they could create a PvP only game, they could even do a roller beetle racing game or a griffon riding flight simulator. What ever it might actually be, it doesn't need to compete with GW2.
You mean directx11? That's a 14 years old graphics api not a "major engine overhaul" lmao
Among other things, yeah.
Doesn't really make sense, typically the opposite would happen and they would start winding down on many things like balance changes, plans for future content, not to mention engine updates and working on stripping old code out of the game and replacing it with better code. Not things you see in a game that is lined up for the guillotine.
Indeed.
It's a huge undertaking for sure and many things can go wrong. The latest update broke a bunch of stuff but they fixed it relatively quickly which is a good sign. Hopefully they learn from it and will be able to avoid or at least mitigate any other issues that may arise.
