Just displays the impact of a vocal minority (within this forum), sadly.
I think you've maybe come into Guild Wars 2 with the mindset that it should function like other MMO's. And since it doesn't , you've come to the conclusion that there's nothing to do.
There's not really much vertical gear grind. Exotics will work just fine.
You can get a full set of those as soon as you hit level 80.
Ascended/Legendar gear is just 5% better (or so)
You can do raids just fine with exotics
Fractals is the exception. And here there is some vertical gear grind, that you can do on many characters. But once it's done on a character, it's done.
So what do you do in the game?
You have to set your own goals.
As you mentioned, there's the story.
There's the mastery system you can level up.
There's PvP/WvW. Both sort of functioning as their own game with progression and all.
If you open up the achievement panel, here's basically 1000's of hours of content.
The achievement/collection panel is sort of GW2's quest log.
You'll earn achievement points, titles, skins, etc
It will give you a sense of guidance too, if you feel that's lacking. However you don't have to if you don't want to.
The collections also has legendaries ofc
There's farming gold in many ways (meta events, fishing, fractals etc)
A lot of people enjoy Guild Wars 2 for grinding/collecting cosmetics, and the game has plenty of those.
There's many longterm goals in the game.
And some will not like this system at all
And that's totally fine
But many do and prefer it over vertical progression
thx for reading :)
A) What Joker said. Horizontal progression just means the incentive looks different from what you might be used to from other MMORPGs: Legendaries, Skins and ultimately: Fun. You should do stuff, because you like it in the first place. It is a game, not a job after all.
If you are not interested in this (or the content isn't fun to you), then this might not be the right game for you.
Just in case, here is one guide that breaks the endgame options down. There are several out there, but most are a bit outdated by now.

B) The negative threads in this forum typically complain about other stuff. Repeatedly and sometimes just because they hate the game they left years ago (so inactive former players). It's also a small group of posters keeping these threads alive and spreading negativity in order to make things look worse than they are. There is valid criticsm, the game is not perfect after all.
I have a theory, i think you can't point fingers and accuse others for breaking the rules, community guidelines and steam online conduct code, even if they in fact did something contrary to such rules, looks like it's forbidden so if you do a public accusation you are warned and sometimes even banned. The thing that triggers a moderation action against you is being specific, by naming someone in particular and what rule was broken by such user. Seems like it's much more serious than any other violation like spam or trolling or idk pick any of the other opitons listed in the steam rules.
Again this is a theory just a posibility, i'm probably wrong so don't take this comment seriously.
In this particular case i'm upset with Anet because they don't send someone to take care of this forum. "Golf with Friends" has dev's and people from the game participating and probably even moderating, you can go there to golf with friends forum and see the game's team with a different nickname color which helps to identify them as part of the game, publishers, developers etc. Same happens in SMITE and other games and i think some community moderators still do moderation work over there. Here the only thing anet is doing is posting about new content, new dlc, gemstore items etc but other than that nope, nada. zero.
Welcome to Tyria!! protect your ankles from asura and always visit divinity reach outside queen's jennha gardens to see the "fashion wars" everyday.
From another still new (well, almost new, from start of summer), welcome to the game and have fun! ^^
It really is a great game and does many things right, and when realizes how fair the gem store gold/gem conversion is also, so that can buy any cool stuff from there also by just playing and getting gold, it's really nice to get shiny backpack wings and whatnot. :)
And the "whiners" are just about the same 3-5 people, with couple of them with more than one account, so literally the definition of "one guy'd".
So instead of even trying to have a reasonable conversation (it has no effect when someone just repeats the same few lines, and tries to farm clown awards) i just blocked them, and any new account from said couple people lmao. So they can just talk alone. I mean they already talk to themselves with 2 accounts. So.. *shrugs*
So never make decisions about games when you read their forums/discussions/reddits and whatnot, those have always a small group of actual trolls. And not even the old type of entertaining trolls. It's some weird trend lately to act like some NPC type of characters who repeat same stuff all day.
I blocked them and forums looks so nice and clean again. Can recommend. :D
So like my best gaming decision this year was to try GW2, it's been awesome!
Second best decision was to just block the "NPC multi account andy".
