The base game is really good, and you said yourself that you were enjoying it.
If you haven't even played for 4 days it will give you a lot of experience with your class and with the game in general.
You don't need ascended gear.
Fractals is the only place you need it
Fractals is the only place in the game you need agony resistance, and you don't need it for early tiers.
Exotic is only like 5% worse than best in slot.
Just buy exotics.
Look up an open world build for HoT here
https://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki
HoT is the most difficult expansion.
You could do PoF first and unlock the first 4 mounts (maybe even griffon if you want to grind a bit for it)
That will make HoT much more managable
But I would still just start out with the base game though
But if you feel like giving up on the game, just go to PoF first instead.
No, "Work on your build" does not just mean "get better gear" like it does in other MMO's. It means to make sure your gear has the right stats for you (in short, more damage - survivability generally doesn't help you win fights), picking a set of weapon types that meshes well together, and setting up the right combination of Specialization traits to further enhance your combat abilities. If, like me, you can't or won't put in the effort to figure synergies out on your own, websites like metabattle exist with popular builds fully set up - though you should always bear in mind when going to these sites that the displayed build will always show the highest-tier and most expensive gear possible for demonstration purposes, and that you will be substituting such gear for much cheaper Exotics with the same stat set until you get to the point where you are able to and want to work on Ascended gear.
Whatever fine, it is just as I guessed from looking online that HoT is just a big f**K off for noobs and is great for those who've done nothing but play this game for hours on end.
Ok dude, have fun
Not everyone has the same experience in HoT, my spouse and myself both breezed through it with basic minion master necro builds. The high defense and healing made up for our terrible skill. Today both of us find those maps easy, but tedious. We don't want to fight, but if we have to, we decimate everything pretty quickly because our builds are optimized and our skill has improved.
Back then, 1k dps is all we were hitting. Today, with nothing but auto attacks I will be sitting closer to 7k dps. Even though I am using the same Viper gear I did back then. 7 times stronger for nothing but just picking better traits. Add skills in there and 28k dps is normal. Not much stands up to that. Again, on the same gear I had 8 years ago.
Open up LFG (Default key Y), scroll down to Fractals of the Mists and select Initiate Scales 1-25. This is the most basic level of fractals where all the new fractal tryouts happen. Builds and rotations dont really matter in this tier. Focus on learning the fractal mechanics.
If you cannot find a group, create your own. Simply click Advertise your group and put in a description. I advise you state beginner or new to fractals. You will be surprised by how many experienced players will join to help you learn.
As for the expansion: Heart of thorns is BRUTAL, specially for newcomers to the game. Take it slow and steady, dont rush into the middle of a group of enemies and dont underestimate pocket raptors.
Then players were noisy about how crazy they went on Heart of Thorns and they needed more reasonable, less group-up-or-fail stuff to do, so we got Path of Fire.
Then the company pissed away what they had and was desperate to get long-gone players back and show the lights were still on, so we got End of Dragons, which starts with basic tutorials about how to play, like dodging.
Take a break from HoT. It won't seem quite as bad later (but it's still rough and requires a lot of attention to details, like which guy is about to throw that insanely deadly line on the ground). PoF (or EoD) will give you enough to do for a while, and HoT will be way better once you are griffon-enhanced. Oh, or run through Verdant Brink to Auric Basin (SW corner), which is a lot more reasonable and has a lot of times to find groups running the map metas. But really, do PoF. Get mounts. Enjoy playing.
There are places to get gear and gold in order to prepare your character, and you might consider visiting them: All level 80 zones of the base game, but especially silverwastes; Fractals Tier 1 (for higher tiers you need more and more ascended gear). Also make sure to do some dailies and world bosses. Getting the right (exoitic) gear is just one part of it. The advice about build sites and learning the synergies and rotations is at least as important.
On LFG: If you don't find groups listed, start your own. There are enough people who are either in a similar spot or happy to help. For HoT maps you can also ask for help/grouping up in map chat. A lot of stuff there get's way easier and more fun in a group, even if it is a stranger.
The rest of you telling me "git gud" or "its so easy" you can get bent and enjoy simping for crap game design.
I literally started playing around two weeks ago and if this is how you treat new players I hope you get nothing but misfortune in your future endeavors.
This is my second try at trying to like GW2 and it has been going well until HoT.
But apparently like all fan bases you voice a complaint people are quick to defend by attacking my skill as a player and not the fact maybe things could be tuned better or reworked to actually help new people discovering the game.
Steam forums are just a bad place for most games. Official forums are better.
As much as people like to brag, Heart of Thorns has always been a massive spike in difficulty. You aren't alone in dropping GW2 when faced with how ridiculous the change is in HoT.
GW2 combat is more like Dark Souls than other MMOs. Core game doesn't even give a hint, so it's like hitting a brick wall in HoT. The "git gud" is really just remembering enemy attacks and dodge/block/evade them. Unlike other MMOs, Defense and Healing will NOT save you. You must learn to avoid most of the damage in some other way.
The good news is, it does get MUCH easier once you start understanding the combat. Getting over that surprise learning curve is annoying, but doable.
Maybe eventually you learn to like HoT for it's challenge. Then again it's not for everyone, but the Living World 1 and 2 will prepare for you that.
Never ever use anything lower than exotic gear (orange colour) at 80lvl and make sure your stats fit your playstyle
Now watch as I go through HoT with level 60 gear no problem. Because as we are trying to tell you, stats don't matter that much. It's your build and your personal skill that matters.
In gw2, your character never gets any better. You the player have to get better.
If your not capable of playing better, then it's not the right game for you.
