Same as in Warframe for example. But the difference in amount of power upgrades you can buy in GW2 as opposed to WF is staggeringly in GW2's favor.
Rivens are mods.
Also Maiming Strike would like to have a word with you.
https://forums.warframe.com/topic/1137980-maiming-strike-nerf/
Tells me that you've never actually played the game.
You can spend bunch of $ on gems and then turn it into gold and pick up some of the crafting mats . But you would still need to lvl up crafting or gather currency's in case of picking it up from raid /pvp/wvw /fractal vendor .
The only bit that you could pick up with $ to gems to gold would be one of the legendary weapons from generation 1 or generation 3 .
But those have the same stats with any ascended weapon that people craft for ~30g and bit of time /effort .
So if you try to p2w in pve you could pick up 1 of the weapons of legendary quality from the trade post for ~$$$ and a full set of exotics .
But the problem is BIlly who started playing ~3 weeks or a month ago can also have the same or even better gear. He could have farmed mats or currencies for his exotics and ascended weapons . And just by playing the game he could have picked up on some of the other ascended parts that can drop from Fractals , world bosses , wvw, pvp ...
If the 2 of you go in a dungeon , strike or a fractal . He will have the more experience with the game from playing it and earning the gear .
In comparison your blinged out weapon is like average joe paying for a magic one way ticket for the top of the mount Everest . Sure you can take a cool picture but coming down on your own is not going to be as fun .
For pvp . States are normalized . If you spend $$$ on a legendary weapon from the trade post you just have funky skin that does same dmg as any white generic weapon BIlly picked up on the pvp lobby npc selling white items for few silver .
If you are counting on the expansions carrying you as a way to p2w you are out of luck again . There are decently competitive builds even for core game . And at most ranks exp is king . A core guard/mesmer/ranger/necro or thief will help out their team a lot more then you with 30-60$ spend on expansiosn as long as they have more game mode exp.
New person trying out an unfamiliar build be it expansion or not will get steamrolled by people playing stuff they know like the back of their hand be it elite spec or full core .
WvW.
Just like pve . You can pick up full set of exotics and spend $$$ on a legendary weapon that will give you same ascended stats available to any of the wvw wets.
The problem is they also have 12 full slots of ascended gear .
+ food buffs , infusions , sigils and runes .
Min Maxed from head to toe with years of exp .
Even if they are goofing off with character under lvl 80 with and lvling gear . Chances are still on their side .
And as for elite specs all of them still have things you can exploit to counter them . Especially in Spvp . In general your team working together and focusing targets , rotating and covering for each with +1 or peeling enemies from your team mates will mean a lot more then 1 person having an elite spec or not .
So in short any competitive mode you are not gaining an edge spending $$$ on gem store vs other people just playing the game .
So you can say that the game has a lot of places where you an spend $$ on . Character slots , bank slots , bag slots any and all kinds of account upgrades . But the fact is you can also pick up those with the gold you earn with playing the game .
Only things you do need to spend $ on is expansion .Rest of the stuff you can pick up as you go along .

I'm new, not stupid. Don't get me wrong, this game is fun but it isn't anywhere near perfect. Its biggest flaw is it has terrible monetization. You can straight up buy gems, convert them to Gold, then use it for whatever in game. Don't have the time to grind, but want a Legendary? Level up at work and swipe that credit card and buy it off the Trading Post.
And this isn't even touching on the fact the system is designed to hobble your inventory and sell it back to you as convenience. But who makes it inconvenient in the first place? Devs do.
I did that.,but I can't find the ascended gear on the trade post. Don't tell me I wasted my gems on gold. You say I can get what I want and I want ascended gear and weapons. If you know what tab to click in TP pls let us know. I really want to pay to win too.
And yeah, ascended gear can ofc also not be bought on the TP, but there are several ways hhow you can get it, like from achhievements, some special vendors, drops from special enemies or simply crafted. In general it's very obtainable and can't be just gotten with only gold.
But honestly, you can pay a million for the game if you want, but you still won't be able to join most Raid teams, or they quickly kick you out after a bit, simply since you don't win by just paying. Without enough skill and experience you're simply too bad to be able to find a proper group that wants to do Raids. But I guess that's for which training groups are for.
It really was a joke. Mostly rhetorical as I run T4s everyday.
Thanks for the clarifications though. ;)
Longer you play something more time you have to find details about it that you like/hate.
There have been a lot .And I do mean a lot of qol changes that happened over time . Some of them people have been asking for years . Others have been "fixed " not long after the first implementation .
Candy corn gobbler for instance. Its amazing if you run pvp/wvw you can boost your reward track by by 50% , get more xp for lvling up characters , masteries , more karma , crafting booster ....
Its cool but you need to spam it to stack up the buffs you like .
2. generation of gobblers snowflake and taffy one you pick and number of times you want to trigger and just press a single button . Sure they dont have as many buffs you can get . But they do stack with candy corn one and are supper easy to use .
The lfg changes so you can see if the commanders map is full . We could have used it 10 years ago .
As much as I could say they just making things focused around forcing you to spend $ and dont care about making the game fun .
I also know
1. That I can farm up 99% of the in game stuff even with minimal daily play time if I just pick few of the worthwhile things to do each time I sit down to play .
2. They are for profit game studio and I do get a better hours of fun /$ invested compared to any of my other games . Excluding Stuff like Warframe where you can spend 0 and still have maxed out account .
3. They have been making some puzzling choices for years . Not even money grabbing specifically just out of the ordinary and lacking common sense .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk717LQnpVE
for instance .
Ice brood saga announcement stream .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7nEC7vgY2g
They rented a whole theater . Drummed it up for more then a month .
Then gave us ~30 min of time filled with bits of old info combined with some new + merch ....
People were expecting the info on the next expansion .
We did get confirmation ~6 months later but that stream alone was a big disappointment for a lot of players .
So parts of the game that get on your nerves that might have a gold/gem sink as a solution could be also caused by lack of understanding , missed opportunities , spaghetti code that you get by not keeping track of your documentation and development tools .
Recently you can see some of the new blood in the company trying to steer the ship towards better communication and better feedback .
Recent example would be warrior changes .They were bad it did take them some time to fix but in comparison to anet from years ago it was way faster .
And in the end I am still having fun . Some people chose to support them by spending ~10$ a month and picking up gemstone stuff they like .
I pick up expansions and try to help out other people who are starting out or coming back to the game . When ever I have few min to answer questions or help out with hp/fractals /dugeons or other in game stuff .
If you think just "swiping" your card will get you a legendary, oh boy, do i have bad news for you. Sure, you can swipe your card, get 2k gold and buy legendary weapon from the traiding post, but only generation 1 and 3. For generation 2 you will actually need to play the game. Trinkets, including both rings, accesories, backpack and amulet? No amount of swiping you credit card will get you those legendaries. legendary amor? You can swipe, but no legendary for you unless you invest time and effort in doing the achievements which can take 50 to 100 hours.
For Aurora, as an exapmle, you need 6 map currencies which you cannot get unless you grind the game.
Next, you need to do 7 collection (Aurora Awakening), of wich the first collection you need to do is build by 4 seperate collections so you can unlock the rest of 6 main collections which will require you to visit every Living Season 3 map and grind it for achievements.
Next collection on the list is Aurora II: Empowering which you need to Infuse a Xunlai electrum ingot at the specific places in Tyria, and those ingots you can craft, but one material needed for that ingot is craftable only ONCE PER DAY, and you need 21 of those. Sure, you can swipe your credit card and buy the crafted ingots, but you still need to infuse them.
Now, i hope you gonna be happy with one legendary you bought from traiding post, because boy, thats the only legendary you gonna be buying from TP.
I got PvP backpack which can take you over 2 months to get just because of one achievement, so go and try swipe your credit card for that one. lol
All people see is first and third generation of legendary weapons on TP and all they think about is p2w, but there is a legendary item for each slot, including legendary runes and sigils, which you cannot swipe with credit card.
