Found a downside of gw2 being on steam...can't buy digital upgrade expansions for exclusive in game items

So I don't play gw2 on steam, I've been playing it for years but my friend got it when it came out on steam....and I wanted him to join me at the lily of the elon....but apparently the only way to get an invitation to the lily of the elon is by purchasing the upgraded version of path of fire, not the normal extension and well steam doesn't have that option. As well as with the other extensions there are items that you can only get from purchasing the upgrade of the games and not the normal versions....so well hopefully steam and gw2 will figure out a way to fix that and offer the digital upgrades at some point.

I tried to look but didn't see anything, though that may be because I already own them but thanks everyone for clearing that up.

the missing option is the upgrade in the gemshop ;)

The only difference between steam and normal players is that steam players can purchase the game and expansions via steam but a non steam player can't do it that way if he starts the game over steam.

Anything else works the same way as for a non steam player including deluxe upgrades. In fact youre steam account actually functions as a new player account and all purchases you do over steam are tied to youre steam account therefore. Beyond that the game itself has the same functionality and uses the same client and the same restrictions for the gemshop are also in place. What you can't do with a steam account however is purchasing additonal buy to play content which does not include anything you could buy with gems.

So your friend should check out the upgrade section of the gem shop to find the solution he needs. By the way you do not even need the deluxe upgrade just the pass to lily of the elon which is included in the deluxe version but there is a 2 week purchase available by different ways as well. He just need the item that allows him to go to that place in the end.

Yep, it's in the gem store. I haven't bought EoD on steam (yet) so I don't see the deluxe upgrade for that, but for everything else (Core game, HoT and PoF), I can buy them for gems.

It's not really advertised or common knowledge. Also, it's 2400 gems for each expansion...

ah thanks...I tried to look in the gem store but didn't see anything...I'll take a closer look next time I log in...then again I may not see it as I own them and it may not be something that I can gift to them but thank you for clearing that up..

I just checked in game and they aren't giftable and I can't find a way to directly gift gems through the game (Aside from sending them enough gold to convert to gems). Your best bet would be to gift them the gems to but it. If they play through that can be either through a digital steam gift card (or physical if it's someone you can see visit in person) or you can get a gem card off somewhere like Amazon but I think i saw someone complaining recently about the amazon gem cards not working (Edit: not working for steam players).
