Generally, try to approach the game with an open mind because I wrote it off way too quick in the past only to find out the game is actually insanely fun.
Take your time, there is no rush and make sure you engage with the UI while leveling. That way you will learn and enjoy the game best.
Don't hesitate to ask questions in the map chat. The community in GW2 is the most friendly and helpful I ever encountered.
You may notice players with badges over their heads:
- Mentors ("apple" over the players head, red icon with a plus on the map):
That badge was initially meant to mark a player as a mentor who intends to help other players. However, this is mostly used to show where events are happening on the map in the meantime. Nonetheless these players will surely as well answer questions and assist and I assume with the Steam start many will also use it again for the initial purpose as mentor. ;)
- Commanders (downpointing triangle or cat face in different colors above players and on map):
These mark players who lead a squad. On open world maps these are usually leading meta events, completion runs, mesmer portal to daily jumping puzzles, etc. Also here, they will surely also answer questions and help.
