A lot of the rewards in dungeons can be found in pvp.
There are dungeon groups and guilds devoted to running PVE group content, but there isnt a massive pool of people trying to run dungeons/fractals/raids in this game like games with loot treadmills and tiered gear progression.
The few ive run over the years have been fun, but realistically, I get way more fun out of WvW and can just set my reward track to any dungeon in game to get loot drops.
It sounds strange at first. What people do in this game for co-op PVE is the world events. Run with a few event trains and youll not get the urge to run dungeons, its just a much more fun environment to do PVE and you can hop in and out at any time ect.
Dungeons: 8 Dungeons + a few during living story that I will not count in here as they are a different systems.
Those 8 dungeons have each a story mode of which 1 is also the core games last story mission.
after you have passed story dungeon you gain access to the explorer mode which is the same dungeon however with 3 different branches you now can take on a mission so in total you could argue its actually 32 dungeons!
However as the dungeon rewards are basically skin and XP based and there are lots of other options to gather those people will not focus on this content and while story mode is doable solo a group can help you. You do not need holy trinity so whoever joins you is basically helpful.
Explorermode is way harder than storymode a group is recommended and in some dungeons during specific mechanics needed. The comunity is quite helpful so asking others for help is recommended this also includes the use of the lfg tool.
Fractals and raids in GW2 are coordinated content therefore it is quite uncommon to find public groups despite the early 20 fractals. There is also a daylie quest system with rewards for fractals which people often like to do. Those fractals are Mini dungeons normally with a few mechanics similar to the big dungeons and it is also content that will actually need the highest gear tier in the longrun with the first few fractals beeing without the argony mechanic while the higher ones will force you to invest in infusions a counter system to argony. This starts cheap of course but it get pricy the higher content you enter and because only ascended gear has 2 infusion slots per part of gear it is needed and also earned in fractals and also most of the needed infusions.
Fractals are more likely to be entered in some sort of befriended group like friends or youre guild members however the daylie system allows for easy lfg random groups as well but might get you confused about the mechanics in place again just ask most people will try to explain it to you the best they can.
Raids well they are raids what is more to say about it ^^ This kind of content is 10 people highly coordinated group play so random groups are nearly unexistent with a few random training groups once in a while of course but this content is best done by guilds which will be more likely to explain all the mechanics to you and allow you to fail as well.
Remember you can be in 5 different guilds so pic them in the way that is best suited for your personal choice of content.
The majority of the game is like it was said before open world content. Some of this content is time gated events like Worldbosses occuring at specific times throughout the day and you should use the command /wiki worldbosses to find a real time information on what events are up right now and upcoming next to participate in.
Another big open world event activity are map meta events which differ by maps with some of the living world and expansion maps to often shift arround those events totally and generate bigger loot the more you play on those events with one big boom event in the end before it all restarts after a short time window. There is no group needed to participate as all people joining the event are basically part of a gigantic group.
What you might find quite often are squads to join often announced to the look for group tool for the specific map you are in to make sure as much as possible players joind the same instance of the map to gather up for the event. Each Squad allows 40 players in there and by rightclicking of any of the members in the squad allows you to go to there instance to participate in the event if you are not on the same instance allready of course ^^
Because of this design dungeons have very low impact in the game even more so as all loot you get is based on both the level of the map and the level of youre character so if you join a worldboss event in a starter area for example at max level the loot you get is stil fully valuable with the event rewards are all about youre character level while all additional loot from normal enemys is depending on the maps level as well. (this is also something you might actually want as some materials salvaged from midlevel loot can be looted this way as well)
This is basically how the system works and it is only a small percentage of stuff to do in total. The important thing is that you get value out of all the content in the game and there is nothing like dead content technically it is just so that most people tend to run after the best loot amounts rather than the experience to that loot which doesn't mean any of the content is just a grind you have to go through in order to get rewarded.
So if you feel the need for a group ask others or use the lfg tool other than that you will mostly not need to be in a group as the playerbase is youre group allready ;)
They are a 1000x more active than dungeons and give way better rewards.
Use the LFG tool in social > LFG > Fractals of the mist 1-25
You unlock more difficulty levels as you climb the fractal ladder and the rewards are much better. Additionally strike missions from icebrood saga and End of Dragons also provide great rewards and are a great source for farming ascended gear.
