If you find filling up the masteries boring then it is the open world that you do not like and not the mastery. Which would be strange. It is the same event system as in the core game that you enjoyed just more refined and on a larger scale. What did you like in core that you do not like on HoT when it comes to events?
Also what else would you be doing in HoT if not for the mastery besides open world anyway when ti comes to progression? Plus the required masteries only take like a few hours to fill up.
As for the big meta events. These events are on a timer and a specific schedule. You need to search on the LFG at the specific time (a bit earlier actually) to find full maps. Trying to do big event on empty maps is not possible. The maps fill through LFG thus being at a random map chances are that there are not enough ppl around, unless you are lucky and the system throws you in a close to a full map. Use the LFG and check the event timers on the wiki.
As far as map metas go, it sounds like you've had the bad luck to be in unpopulated layers. They're popular events, and the best thing to do is look into the lfg panel, and find a squad doing the map you're on. When you join, you can "taxi" to their layer by right clicking the squad panel and join them in the map instance they're in. You can immediately leave once you're there, people do it all the time, or stay in the squad.
Cuz with core game i was lvling up normally and i didnt have extra mastery points to spend, it was i upgrade on each lvl ups, with HoT and even core game later on i gained a lot by doing living world but i saw that i cant use the point to learn masteries which is really dum imo that i have the points but i still have to sink in exp tho exp was meant to lvl up to gain a mastery point in the first place but now that i have the points i still have to fill in exp. the other thing is that i wanted to focus on story and then do the other stuff not that i didnt like the events or open world.
As of meta events i didnt know about LFG nor those new players that came into the game cuz im pretty sure the ones i was running with in the world were new as me
Idk if ill be able to go through all the masteries, it already made me unmotivated just to see that i have to lvl up for each, as for lfg thanks for the insight, didnt know about it since the game doesnt tell u or it did but i didnt pay attention ill keep this in mind
a tip for you: Get %10 perma xp buff from your guild hall (G > guild hall > find enchanchment from map and take xp buff.)
foods gives you %10 xp buff from kills.
utility gives you %10 xp buff from kills.
most xp comes from kills so total %30 extra xp and they all stack. You can buy cheap food + utility.
about meta events, you must be find full group from LFG and jump to their map.
mastery system is not a big deal. It is one time only content. I cant even understand how somebody can cry about it. All you have to do some pve for xp (meta events gives huge xp. ingame command is "/wiki et" just type and enter)
a tip for mastery : always learn first masteries.
a tip for pof mastery : you dnt need to max them if you are missing some masteries.
srry for my bad english.
You only NEED a few masteries to progress on the story:
- Glider Basics (Gliding Level 1)
- Updraft Use (Gliding Level 2)
- Bouncing Mushroom (Izel Lore Level 1)
- Exalted Markings (Exalted Lore Level 1)
- Nuhoch Hunting (Nuhoch Lore Level 1)
Not all players go for full mastery,, and you can get back to HoT maps to complete the masteries later whenver you aren't "bored". Also, I'm sorry to say, but this is how the mastery progression works and won't change because you didn't like it, there is now way around, if you want the extra masteries you need to level them up.
if u like the pvE endgame, then u need masteries, but then u will do tons of hours within pvE maps anyways and it shouldn't be hard to gather the XP for them
If you're not planning on leaving the core game maps anytime soon, the one you probably would find most helpful is finishing up the "Pact Commander" as the last track for that, Advanced Logistics, will let you learn to auto loot, which takes a load off your mind.

But people today love to think of everything they don't get right away as being unjustly "hidden behind walls" :)
In all honesty, in my experience, when you just go from meta to meta (and others) working on the achievements for the mastery points themselves, you get so focused on getting the achievement done that by the time you've got a mastery point, the bar is pretty much full lol.....
Hearts give trash reward.
World bosses gives trash reward.
Dungeons gives trash reward beside dungeon token.
Enemy drops gives trash reward.
Skill progressions stops after lvl 30.
Some zones are completely empty no hearts at all and events no one doing them.
Dont need to grind for best armor since you can get orange gear cheap on trading post you are good to go.
You feel zero reward for doing things.
