Mount Trial Question

Hi there. So it seems that in order to fully unlock the mount, which is a raptor, i need to purchase the heart of thorns & path of fire expansions. That is fine. But i feel there's a weird issue.

The mount trial status buff says ''purchase an expansion to unlock mounts now!''. Ok fine, but i read online a little bit and looked at in game menus. Originally, the mounts or the 1 mount, raptor, is supposedly unlocked through playing path of fire expansion a little bit and is at level 80.

So if i buy the expansion now, will i just keep the mount as is and continue leveling to 80? Or whether or not if i buy it now or not, i will only be able access it at level 80 after going through a questline? Honestly my only gripe is having a mount during the leveling process.

If no matter what i do, if after the trial ends, you are doomed to walk around until 80, that is a major letdown for me and i doubt i will buy it then. I don't know. If any veterans around who can shed some light on this, please let me know, thanks.

You must have read older guides. It has changed a bit with the raptor mount, that is something you can now just unlocked at lv10 even with the expansion. The other mounts do require some effort though.

"New Player Experience

New accounts with an expansion unlocked will be granted permanent access to the basic raptor mount after they reach level 10 on a single character.

Characters on Play for Free accounts (as well as Core accounts without an expansions) will get a 10-hour trial of the basic raptor mount when they reach level 10. These cannot be dyed.

Raptor Masteries can still only be unlocked in the Path of Fire expansion.

All accounts with a character already over level 10 when this change was implemented on August 2nd 2022 missed this initial unlock checkpoint, but they will get the unlock on the next multiple of 10 level (so, a level 24 character will get the unlock at level 30). ArenaNet acknowledges that this is not an ideal solution and is working on additional methods to offer this unlock to players not caught by this fallback solution."

If you buy the expansion, then you will automatically get the raptor mount. I believe there may be some slight leveling issue, like its only unlocked on every tenth of the level (lvl 10, lvl 20, lvl 30...etc.), so this may mean that if you are level 11 you have to wait until level 20 until the mount is unlocked. Though i am not entirely sure about it, mine was immediately unlocked and i dont know which level i was then, but certainly something low.

The stuff you can unlock at lvl 80 are masteries to further enhance your mounts. I believe there are contradicting informations on the internet, because back then you indeed had to unlock the mount at lvl 80, if i understand correctly.

thanks for the info. I do have one additional question which may sound weird but it is an honest concern.

The trial is going to end in a bit. Do i have to buy the expansions now to keep it? Like if i let the trial run out before i purchase, is it locked out until 80 or is it ok if i purchase it any point and i can have it for leveling?

Yes, you can have it while leveling.
Basic mount are now unlocked for full account, start from level 10.
But mount mastery will locked, until 80, and having PoF expac

In case the trial period ends, you will unlock the permant raptor the next time you hit a level that is a mulitple of 10 (10, 20, 30, ...) with any of your characters as long as you have purchased any expansion by then. EoD also counts, but if you get only one, the bundle of HoT+PoF is the better deal.

Note that mounts are account-wide things and not per-character. Any character you make will have the basic raptor now that you have it unlocked, and if you use your boost and unlock and upgrade other mounts, those unlocks and upgrades similarly cover all your characters. Same goes for gliders and gliding upgrades: start Heart of Thorns with a level-80 and you will unlock gliding on all characters.

Besides the obvious glider advantage of falling to your death less, you can also activate it while in combat, unlike mounts, so you can sometimes jump off an edge to flee.

Watch out for jump puzzles and their surrounding anti-mount/-glider zones. They will very much just yank it out from under you if you get too close, which can be quite unfortunate if you are flying...
