As for core class that is a good support, you can use engineer with med kit, and elementalist with water attunment.
The third option is guardian with boon support.
That said, up to lvl 80 ppl dont need a healer, so it can feel a bit slow, but at the end game healer is very good.
Guardian is the most obvious choice. It has your support from level 1 and is one of the best for the role at End game.
Support weapons (which heal) are staff, mace, and shield. Underwater, Trident heals.
first don't use level boost on your first class.
many of use make that mistake... :(
second,
Guardian - Staff, support and healing
Ranger - Druid - Staff weapon, do damage and healing/support (HoT expansion)
Thief - Specter - Scepter weapon, damage, support, the only class who can single target support (EoD expansion)
other class, have been answered by people above me
I am not quite sure about other class, but most all can be a support.
DPS, Offensive support, Defensive support.
Defensive supports are going to be, in most cases, your healers. Which one you play depends on the content you are doing, and what your squad needs.
There is heal firebrand (guardian), which is the standard go-to support class, which comes with the most utility in the game, as well as quickness, stability, condition cleanse, and aegis spam. Its heals are good, but they aren't the strongest. However, they don't need to be the strongest, because the class more than makes up for it with all its other utilities and boon output.
If you want straight up healing power, there is Heal tempest (Elementalist). Pretty much the strongest class in the game as far as healing output alone goes. Not as strong on the utility/boon output as firebrand, but it comes with permanent 25 might, permanent protection (-40% damage) for your team, and permanent alacrity (cooldown reduction).
If you want to absolutely carry your team no matter how bad they are, you can also try Heal Scourge (necromancer). Its not your traditional healer, as it doesn't really heal all that much, but it dumps massive barriers constantly, and because of its transfusion trait, you can teleport downed players to you and nearly instantly revive them. Your whole team can go down, and you can revive them all within seconds. Its extremely hard to lose when your team can't die.
The other one I can think of off the top of my head is Heal Mech (Engineer). I haven't played this spec yet, so I cant comment on it, but its pretty well known that its busted, because everything regarding mech is busted.
There are others, as you mentioned, druid is also a good healer, but its one I haven't really played since I just don't like ranger that much. But the ones I listed are very top tier support specs. If you are wanting to be super flexible as a support, go with Guardian.
Thanks for all the information , i didn't know that Guild Wars 2 has so such a deep Profession/build system.
I bought the expansions yesterday so i don't have to delete my characters anymore.
Unexpected, i really like the revenant a lot at the moment. Maybe I will stick with it for a while.
That is the funny thing, pick a class that you like, then make it support heal.
Additionally any xp exceeding the mastery you are working on (or if you don't wokr on them) will grant you spirit shards, a material you need for crafting. So never worry too much about the XP bar.
And guarding feels excellent ,i love the blue flame theme.
For example, I have my attunement swaps on Q, E, R, and C so they are all within comfortable reach. Its actually more convenient for any class with a lot of F# keys.
Unless of course you are comfortable with the F# keys.
