Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2

GW2 has changed too much.
I loved the base game back when it released. As well as living world seasons that came after. As for HoT, the story was ok but I really didn't like the map and it's progression. Wasn't really a fan of the whole glider system and verticality of the map. I've just started playing again after about 5 or so years of being away, and can't seem to find a groove to properly get back into this game.

On a side note, it's really off-putting to me to see so many people on mounts. I always liked that guild wars was different in it's travel machanic. And how it incouraged you to explore on foot. Instead of just racing past everything on a raptor or skimmer. One good thing that came from all this change was I rediscovered my love for GW1.

Plenty of other MMO's out there where mounts are not even in them or not needed(like New World, DnD, etc). I would try that out. From what I have read EoD is even worse with verticality.

Dungeons and Dragons Online still gets significant content updates. Wish other MMOs were as deep.

Other MMO's don't have 50 or so years of directly related content to draw on.

You don't need 50 years of related content to have useful skills, spells, and perks that aren't directly related to combat. Nor do you need that much time to allow players to more freely customize their characters instead of Warrior ONLY using martial weapons or Mage ONLY using magic spells.

Back then I enjoyed the idea of being on foot as well. But the mounts are fun to use, each has a specific use and they have become integral part of the later gameplay and map design too. Same goes for the glider. So while I don't think later map have gone as crazy on the verticality as HoT (there is no Tangled Depths 2.0), they still have a significant part of that, definitelly more than the base game maps. That said: You can opt to do a lot of stuff on foot and you might be surprised how far you can get with it.
If you love the exploration aspect: That is not lost. I think it is even more emphasized, you just have more tools to reach the places instead of always beeing forced to do jumping puzzles.

Regarding the mount system, i somewhat agree with you. It kinda ruins the sense of exploration (especially skyscale). I tried to do HoT map exploration again with mounts and suddenly the maps lose their charm.

I have played GW2 for ~5 years from launch, I took a break because I had no more content in the base game, I just kept repeating the same things.
GW2 is about exploring, you miss so many things with a mount.

From where I am coming from, it was really getting used to do everything without a mount.
Certain people from the GW2 community have been asking for a mount for years, at the end the developers agreed, now, the mounts, not all, are content per se, the more "exotic" mounts like the Griffon and the Skyscale are a real pain to get. Good thing is that you can use a Griffon for free later on from one of the nests placed in certain regions, as long as you stay mounted.

The "annoying" thing I see with mounts, more for other people; when there is some kind of event, it is over before you know it, because people with mounts are way faster.
I think it would be nice to have some kind of mount in the base game, just for the above mentioned reason.

Well, you get that now with the raptor (or raptor trial) at level 10.

The trial does not really count, as it expires after 10 hours, to be clear, I am talking about permanent mounts obviously.

Trial is only in F2p.
A new player that has purchased PoF will still permanently unlock raptor at lvl 10 on first character.

I said in the base game, you really need to read the full context mate.

I'd suggest hitting Path of Fire and focusing there a while. You'll get used to the mounts and see how they add to exploring in the space specifically designed for them to add to exploring, and the general design-feel of PoF is a lot more like the core world than like Heart of Thorns. Once you have your griffon (a post-PoF story process) and can air-dismount to swap back and forth between it and gliding, I suggest returning to HoT and exploring it with new eyes. If you haven't done much mastery in HoT, get gliding up to advanced gliding and also bouncing mushrooms. That plus the mounts makes for a much better toolbox to actually enjoy the shape of things there.

My partner and I started GW2 a little after PoF, so we had mounts from the beginning, and we have enjoyed lots and lots of exploration across the game, early zones included. Mounts don't mean you can't or won't enjoy exploring. They just mean you can get where you're going when you want to. That's fine. We don't need to be forced to do everything slowly.

It's more that no one should lock themselves in the limited, trial version instead of buying into the huge upgrade you get with PoF+HoT.

Beeing a "foot soldier" got old really fast after the 6th alt or so, as did getting map completion.
Wouldn't even contemplate coming back without the new mounts.

The base mount you get is slow in comparison to a raptor with long jump. I got a 2nd account & yesterday doing kessex event daily events were over before I got close many times. Vets could be more considerate on base game maps.

thats the thing though most people think they 20 alt char's to progress or even enjoy the base game. which is not true at all. i did 100% for both the base game and HoT on just one char. and as far as the base game went i enjoyed every second of it. trying to figure out how to climb up to vista on foot just seems more fun than simply hopping on a griffon and flying up to it. but yeah i dont see why anyone would want to go through map completion on more than one char.
