Is this game solo friendly?
I think I was going to play this game years ago, but when I looked into playing it solo, people were suggesting it wasn't very fun to play solo and that none of the classes were good for it. Is that still the case, any tips if not?

Not sure who said that to you, but they are dead wrong. There are plenty of solo content and you don't need to join groups to do Meta Events. Just tag along and leave whenever you feel like it.

As for classes good for solo? All classes have that capability. It depends on your build and how skilled you are with it.

Any class you might suggest to a new solo player? Or should I just pick whatever sounds cool?

Well, seeing you are new to the game, anything but Elementalist. That one requires more skill with its piano like play style. However it really does depend what your play style is.

I don't really know my playstyle, haven't played an mmo since Burning Crusade in WoW. Soo I guess I'll figure it out! Thanks for the tips.

Then my suggestion is using the PvP Lobby. You will have instant access to all your skills and core builds (not including elite specs if you do not have the expansions) to try out that class even against some punchable targets on there. You can access it by clicking on the cross swords icon bringing up the PvP Menu and clicking Enter PvP Lobby.

Each class can be a bit information overload, but take the time to learn how each class works. There are websites out there that also give out build templates you can use to also try out.

Note: Once you leave the PvP Lobby, you will revert back to whatever level you were before entering. It is just that PvP makes everyone stand on equal grounds. You do not need to enter a match. The lobby is just a playground to test your classes.

I personally feel Necro, which is a mage tank is the best for solo.
I have solo my way up to level 80, the max cap. I play a bit slow because of my physical disability, but didn't encounter many boredom. Just took my time and didn't try to rush.

You may have trouble finding people to run Dungeons with as they aren't really popular now as Fractals have replaced them, but the latter can only be run when you hit 80. You can join a PUG or even host your own PUG by using the helpful LFG option. You can use this for practically everything if you want to join others.

Have fun!

I picked this game up after not playing for ages and tried engineer. That's been pretty good solo.
Turrets can be your new friends. :3

I rolled an Necromancer to 80, all F2P. It was fun in the sense of being fairly easy, just mash buttons. Based on my experience, I don't really have any desire to play further as what I read (raiding doesn't require tanks/dps/heals, "I won 7 PVP matches mashing buttons") is everything else is pretty much this "easy" and there's just no real sense of achievement. Zones are very small and no mount isn't that big of a deal.

But I say play the game and maybe your experience will be different to the point you see a point in raiding, or doing PVP, or crafting when you hit the end game. Expansions are said to be more challenging. I'm not really convinced enough to play any further.

I've played solo most of my playtime & I started around when hot came out. There are things you can't do solo but theyvare either skippable, easy to find others or on big meta events there are others trying to complete the same stuff so it's not an issue.

I've played all classes & although there are some I prefer there isn't one better than another for solo play.

Thanks guys. I ended up going Sylvari Ranger, Sylvari looked cool and I like having a pet, I rolled Hunter in WoW :>
I played this game before Steam with just F2P content, and now I'm able to buy the expansion.
I say, based on all the classes that I tried, its pretty fun solo. In fact, I feel that I'm playing a "massively singleplayer online" quite frequently, since people don't talk or interact much with each other.

There are moments that I find frustrating, though. Like story missions that seems that are tweaked for multiplayer, with enemies and bosses spamming AoE, DoT and other nonsense. You can always respawn for the checkpoint, but c'mon! Cut some slack.
Some high level areas are too stressful as well, with enemies going aggro from the distance, of just cause they have a big wondering area. Sometimes I just want to take a break, and have to try to find a safe spot.

Bear in mind, I'm not saying this game is bad. Every game have its cons. Just mentioning some things that I wish would be different.

Ranger's a solid solo class. Axes and longbow let you engage everything at range. Greatsword will offer some stun and mobility. I really enjoy mine, and soulbeast is pretty sweet, but base ranger is still pretty good at endgame if you don't have the x-pacs.

I personally love Warrior with dual axe and greatsword on swap, and I keep maces on the occasion I need to wreck defiance bars (though bladesworn covers that too). It's really fun as a base class and only gets better when you unlock elite specs. Bladesworn is practically an anime character.
