Guild Wars 2 is NOT free to play.
No, just no. Guild Wars 2 is definitely not free to play. What you get for free is essentially a demo. You get the very first part of the game. Basically, you get an incomplete game. They sucker you in with the word "free". And after they have you they say "Hey, guess what, your adventure is incomplete. Buy the expansions to enjoy the rest of the game."

And to be honest, I don't actually have a problem with a game not being free to play. What I DO have a problem with is the unnecessary deception they use to sucker people in. They call this game which is anything but free to play, free to play. And that is messed up.

Oh yeah, and there are microtransactions. So this game is NOT free to play AND it has microtransactions.

I am one of the people who bought this game when it originally released. I bought in because I thought it was going to be free to play after I bought the game. That is how they worded it. Buy the game and it is free to play from then on. They lied, flat out lied.

I did not buy back in. I moment they reneged on that, I left. There wasn't even a debate, it was instant.

And just so you know, you can buy in and still have to buy in again later. That is the truth, that is what you should expect. Just know that before you buy. Don't buy in because you think this game is free to play, because it is not.

Edit: I decided to edit this post, because, after so many comments it appears there seems to be some sort of confusion here. This is not about whether the game should cost money or not. In fact, this game is VERY reasonably priced. The amount of game you get for the money you spend on it, it is a really good value.

But that is not the subject of this thread. To be clear, the subject of this thread is about the free to play tag this game has in the Steam store. This is not a free to play game. In order to have the game be fully up-to-date you have to PAY for it. And since you have to PAY for it, it simply cannot be free. "Pay" and "free" are mutually exclusive.

The game is free to play ... You can play the whole main campaign with just a few limitations chat and trading wise.

The game has paid dlc but that doesn't mean that it's not free to play.

The microtransactions are also not that bad. You can buy the smaller dlc and lots of cosmetics with it but nothing that gives you an edge over other players

Not only do you get the whole first campaign, that's 100 hours right there for free. You get access to all crafting. And even silverwastes and dry top which are part of season 1/2.

Not sure why anyone would avoid trying the game. It doesn't even have malware attached to it like basically every MMORPG from South Korea or China.

"you can buy in and still have to buy in again later. That is the truth, that is what you should expect"

Does that sound Free? At all? They crank out additional content on a regular basis. Once you pay once you pretty much HAVE to continue paying to keep up with your in-game buddies or else fall out of the loop.

It is malicious and shady. Those who are still playing today are getting taken advantage of. That is the reality. That is the truth. This game is not free to play. At best it is free to demo.

You forgot to mention the $15USD monthly subscription. They really getting one over on everybody with that. Yep you're right, pay to win all the way.

I have no idea what you are talking about. The only things that you "have to" pay for to not be behind on content are expansions, and since 2012 there have been 2 so far, with a third expansion coming sometime 2021. If you begin playing today, the only thing you have to buy are expansions in a bundle for €30 regular price or €15 when its on sale(which it is right now, until 23. Nov). The rest of content (lw seasons you missed) you can buy for gold, which you can farm easily the required amount.

And yes, it's not free, its a buy 2 play MMO which is a very generous model(for an mmo)

I did not say it is pay to win. I said it "is not free to play". And it is not free to play. You can say what you will. But that will not change the FACT that this game is not free to play.

Got IceBrood Saga next chapter absolutely free yesterday, and so did everyone else who logged in. Free.

You keep saying "Free to Play" as if you know what it means. It does not mean "Free".
I suggest you look up the definition of "Free to Play." Your opinion does not change what every Google search will tell you otherwise.

LW episodes have always been free to unlock on release, you only have to buy them if you never logged in when they were still most recent content(applies to all new players sadly)

Usually this isn't much of a problem, it doesn't take a lot of crystald/gold to buy them individually, and you don't want all 100% of them anyway any time soon. Except if you want to get the new flying mount(which is awesome btw), a new player will have to buy all 6 episodes of s4 to unlock it.

And you are acting like this is a valid argument. It is not.

Guild Wars 2 is not free to play. Period. There are no arguments against that. Because the game is not free to play. The mental gymnastics you guys are trying to pull off, in attempt to change reality somehow, is too much for you.

It is going to take a lot more than hopeful fanboyism to argue with me.
