Finally we can install and play Dirt 2 without installing GFWL.
Download Dirt 2 (don't start the game yet or it will install GFWL).
First delete the GFWL folder (in the "redist" folder wherever your Dirt 2 install is.
Goto http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Bulletstorm
Download the "xlive.dll" file from this page and drop into your Dirt 2 folder.
Then start Dirt 2 and it will install and play as though GFWL was never a part of it. You can save your games locally too :)

This works great, thanks. In fact, the idea was so good, I deleted my local content and reinstalled just so I could do this.

I tried to post a similar kind of thing for GTA IV (the modified dll solution), but Steam were constantly censoring my posts to remove any references and links.

Glad it worked for you after reinstalling. Steam should implement this fix into the game. It isn't our fault the game has been removed and the mess that was gfwl has gone.
