DiRT 2 on Windows 10 Solved!!

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, DiRT 2 was never working on Steam, it would never launch, always crashing on startup.

I searched around this forum and found a suggestion for getting rid of Games For Windows Live using a hack that worked on the game Bulletstorm. That fix worked and allowed DiRT 2 to launch but all of my saved games were lost! I've been playing DiRT on and off for 6 years and if I lost all that progress I was going to cry. :)

I finally solved the problem today so I thought I would post my fix to maybe help some others.

Even though Microsoft has closed down the Games for Windows Live Marketplace, it seems that they still maintain the backend servers required for saved games. The trick is that the GFWL version that is bundled with the Steam DiRT 2 install files is no longer compatbile.

The fix is to uninstall any version of Games for Windows Live that is still on your system and install the newest version that can be found here:

After installing this newer version, you will see that DiRT 2 will launch from Steam!

Next, you have to login with your Microsoft account.

Next, it prompts you to enter the CD Key, which you can get from Steam by pressing SHIFT-TAB and then click CD-KEY.

It will then prompt you that the Games for Windows Live client needs to be updated. Click Yes and it will kick you back to the desktop and update the GFWL client.

The next time you launch DiRT 2, you will see all of your saved progress will be there!

Instructions worked fine up until I had to sign into my old windows live account. I have 2 of them and both failed with this error:

The profile could not be signed in to LIVE. There may be a network problem or the Windows Live ID service may not be available.

There was a button below that to check "Network Status".

The info listed there was pretty standard stuff except for Internet IP Address which said "Not signed in" and UPnP which said "Not signed in" also.

I switched back to my desktop to check if I was offline. A prompt for Windows Firewall was waiting for me to approve Games For Windows Live.

I did that. Restarted. Made sure my internet was working. Restarted the game. Tried to log in to GFWL and got the same error with the same info on the "Network Status" view again.

Looking at the "more info" view regarding the Network Status errors and I think maybe my wifi router is responsible for my problems (NAT, UPnP)

I have Windows 10 and I decided to play DIRT 2 again, since the last time I played was 8 years ago.

I have already installed Games for Windows as indicated, but when opening my session and the game, I must start from the beginning and I remember very well that the last time I played I already had a breakthrough.

How can I recover those games? Thank you

u can NOT recover a singlething, cause the braindead f00ls at microsoftiez closed the [LIVE] network 4 good. so look for games that have the steam/win10 logo.

chifferhuertas, this is funny timing. I'm the one whot wrote this original post and I too just recently had to come back to this. I recently did a clean wipe of my Windows 10 PC and reinstalled everything from scratch. I looked up this old post to see how to get Dirt 2 working again. I followed the same instructions and everything works for me. The only difference is I couldn't find the Games for Windows Live exe at the link I posted above. I saved a copy of it in case Micrsoft decided to stop posting it. The name of the file is "gfwlivesetup.exe" so maybe you can find it elsewhere.

The other thing I noticed is that I have save game files stored locally on my PC in Documents/My Games/DiRT2/savegame so try to see if you have those files in any of your backups.

But maybe they were downloaded because when I look at the dates of most of them, it cooresponds to the date around when I reloaded everything.

Correction, I just noticed the GFWL client download link does still work at the Microsoft site:

I've had a different problem with this game though, my Logitech MOMO racing wheel is no longer recognized by the game. I spent almost an entire afternoon hunting and trying to hack a solution but I can't figure it out.
