If this is the only boss that you question on the hard mode, then you've probably had a very smooth experience. At least 70% of the bosses on the hardest difficulty are borderline broken and unbalanced :D Also, the Croakhis Khan and his explosive arrows have the similar issue to that of the Maiden's boomerang.
-The boomerang hitting you while blocking is a glaring issue.
-Also her red jab attack, which you basically can only dodge, if and only if you are very close to her (which almost never happens) or you can get out of range (which also seldom is the case, since most of the time you are sitting on your ass from the boomerang before^^).
First, I felt like I'm missing some mechanic on how not to be knocked on your ass by blocking the boomerang...alas...
-Her jumping boomerang attack has a too large area that it will hit, since it will hit you behind her, when it looks like, you are well out of range.
I also just ended phase 1 as fast as possible by unloading the whole of the pistol ammo on her. The second phase ist actually enjoyable. The third phase doable, although it sees the return of the nasty jab. :P
All in all, I would not say it was the hardest boss battle, but defintely the worst...
Back to Shield Maiden. Yeah probably the hardest boss from DLC like it should be but I don't know how for others but for me the final boss from the main story was the hardest. Of course I am talking about hard difficulty, so in my opinion if someone killed the final boss, he should be able to defeat all bosses.
Every other boss in the game is a lot more doable on hard difficulty than that beast.
I agree that the big sis isn't really an enjoyable fight. Besides hitting like a truck, her attacks leave very little room for anything else than parrying or dodging, and not even ONCE in dozens of attempts did I ever manage to successfully dodge that damn red jab.
Also, the combination of her size and aesthetic, the abundance of background details and the screen shaking every time she slams makes it difficult to even keep track of what's happening and actually see the telegraphs.
The only reason why she's behind my back now, is because in an attempt where I managed to barely survive through phase 1 and 2 with almost no health and an empty canteen, when phase 3 kicked in I got RIDICULOUSLY lucky and while dodging, rolling and slashing around almost in clueless panic, I somehow kept finding myself in the right places to avoid her slams and swings without really planning it.
Somehow I hit the jackpot and beat the girl by button mashing.
