Are villages worth it?
I mainly play a rogue, so healing options are kinda limited. I've tried using the village a few times, but it seems the health I get is negated by the harder 'quest' monsters, and the scarecrows from the fields hit me for more than the extra health they grant. Am I just using them incorrectly?

well the scarecrows are bad for rouge yeah. but villages upgraded with vampires are still great. the quest monsters are not upgraded at all, its just picking a random already existing monster and making it worth a little more (or same as always as far as rouge cares).
It's worth remembering that you get stronger by fighting, especially with the rogue. Yes, you have to fight scarecrows too now, but having a fight be offset by the gain you get for accepting that fight can be pretty good for scaling. That said, I typically don't run villages on their own. I find it much more effective to run villages alongside vampire manors. This'll transform them into five enemy fights for the next three loops, and then they become even more beneficial villages. The extra trophies from the fights are nice, as is the extra reward from the primo villages.

Villages tend to be a noob trap. Your gut feeling is correct, you take a ton more damage sometime if you get the wrong monster. It's often one of the fews ways outside bosses to actually die. They have their uses, but you gotta have a specific idea of what you need them for and it shouldn't be healing.

Put Vampire Mansions next to them, for 3 loops you get a 5-6 monster spawn to farm for a lot of trophies and afterward you'll get a ton of health. It's good to take outposts and put them next to these because those guys will help tank a lot of damage to keep your health high.

I used the wheat fields a lot in the beginning, but with time I realized I'd rather have something else on those tiles as the heal bonus is not very impressive. The village is still good imo, but to get the most out of it you want to setup a vampire beside it. The Rogue especially likes the extra enemies, but you need to be careful early because it might be too risky (watchtowers are a big help to get started on this). The other problem is quest monsters, as you said : as a Rogue you want as many enemies as possible, the weaker the better. You don't want a flesh golem to get +200%HP and it yields no extra loot unlike the other characters. Thus you probably want to remove cards that spawn fewer, stronger enemies, and the wheat field is one of them.

I stopped using villages, they just spawn harder enemies and the loot rewards aren't even worth it
Maybe you could use them with the Vampire's mansion. 4 ghouls give some decent experience and then you get to scale fasters. Maybe try using the gold card "Arsenal". The Rogue gets the slot to carry the amulet. Since the rogue usually kill things quite fast, the amulet is usually enough to protect your main health.

On infinite runs you need villages for path tiles that only have 3 adjacent roadside tiles (and so can't fit 4 lanterns to get to 0 spawn cap).
Using them as ghoul spawners works well, generally you will beat the boss and bail before too many become count's lands.
Since bandits were added normal villages are just kind of bad now.

what i like to do is put down a village then when you get an oblivion use that on the vampire's mansion (because the village will stay ransacked and will upgrade even if the mansion is gone) the key is don't put down fields until after the village has upgraded another thing is l like to put my stuff in sets of 3 with one space between them so [3 monster spawns] then space and then [field village field] and repeat. Arsenal is a must for rouge (hell it's practically a must for all classes)

Villages are only good for the warrior honestly. The Rogue and the Necro don't rely that much on their health, so don't bother with villages for them.

I use them for Necro for healing when I play with swamps.
Id setup a Vampire Mansion to turn the village and then remove the mansion to make the fight easier.

wheat fields are bad but villages are great as rogue when coupled with vampire mansion, lets you collect a lot of trophies during early loops when it's too slow for spiders to fill a tile

Yes, villages are great and especially if you manage to improve them with Mansions, however Wheat Fields are predominantly worth it only for the Warrior.

I don't use villages at all anymore, on any class. Once you get your camp upgraded a bit and get supply items that increase your base health, amount of health from passing your campfire, and potion quantity and strength, villages don't have any purpose. And as you say, the quest monsters can easily negate the benefits from villages, particularly at higher loop numbers.
