Games with similar aesthetics?
I adore this game, but I want like a full regular RPG with a similar vibe. It doesn't have to be strict Amiga-style 16-color but something with a comparative gloomy atmosphere is definitely appreciated.

hmmm, maybe remnant: from the ashes
the second one should be coming out later this year as well
stellar game, everything is edgy and the gameplay is very fun and also has high replay value like loop hero
not the same type of game in the slightest but it has a dark theme to it
even the jungle is very dull and sad looking but beautiful for it's gloomy beauty lol

oh! also darkwood! not as colorful and it's quite a frightening game, super duper horror style
it's truly incredible how amazing a game darkwood is, and it was only made by 5-6 people. def look into that if you want to :)

dead space 1 and 2 are also very dark, and spooky. if i could live somewhere it'd be in the damaged ishimura out in the middle of space hell

uhh hmm. scorn is also dark and depressing looking. incredible, beautiful art and creativity was put into the game but the actual gameplay is garbage. it's full of weird puzzles and what not but the way it looks looks like it would be fun to walk through, if you're a fan of edgy/horror stuff XD

also cannot forget left 4 dead/lrd2 :3 hella mods from the community as well, so you can make it look a lot spookier~

idk hope this helps, i'd recommend any of these games to someone who likes darker looking video games n-n)b

dark souls? elden ring? fromsoft games and even most souls-like games usually have a dark, heavy atmosphere and it would be pretty accurate to say they are RPGs.

some games that more losely fit the category are kenshi (different looking world but still very depressing and has rpg elements), skyrim (which can be modded to fit your taste and even has mod guides on how to make it into a dark feel but this is more of a last resort), and even though this is a bit of a stretch, maybe noita or valhiem (if you look up valheim forst or swamp, you can get a feel for how dark the atmosphere can get). honestly, you picked a hell of a game to try to find something like it. its a one of a kind really. the feel you're going for though is probably dark fantasy. i'd try searching around using that genre if i were you.

OP seems to be talking mostly about visual aesthetics. Like, Stuck In Time would be an extremely on the nose suggestion if they hadn't asked for more traditional RPG mechanics.

I'm having trouble thinking of a game that fits both of these. Most of the retro stuff I can think of that is this particular kind of gloomy are in other mechanical genres, like Metroidvanias, or the Zelda type of ARPG. I feel like I have a distant memory of at least seeing ads years ago for actual old RPGs that have this aesthetic, but I wouldn't know which ones to recommend.

+looking for the same

Darkest Dungeon seems to be what could be exactly what you yearn for. Same aesthetic plus an rpg style gameplay. Also DD focuses a lot on choices and risk management, if you like loop hero for that kind of thing, DD is a great choice to pick up.

If you want more an action rpg ala metroidvania style then the perfect choice for that genre would be Blasphemous. It's basically a metroidvania mixed with a Medieval catholic fever dream

BIG SAME. I want a whole ass 16-bit turn-based RPG with these dungeon synths and amazing pixel arts.

Wonder if Mina the Hollower won't nail what we're looking for here.
