They only drop starting from chapter II.

The ones for the forest are dropped by living things, like spiders and ratwolfs. They don't always drop so it might take some time.

The bottom one for the river drops from fights with four or more enemies.

You need a tile that adds an enemy to an adjacent tile. Like Vampire Mansion, Collapsed Bookery, or Temporal Beacon. If you find an encounter with 4 enemies, these will give you the 5th.

Vampire Mansions add a Vampire to an encounter. If you also use Chrono Crystals to speed up spawn rates, you can easily have 4 enemies in a tile + Vampire. Villages next to Vampire Mansions also spawn 4 Ghouls, to which the Vampire is added. This way you can make entire paths of one 5-enemy encounter after another. Temporal Beacons also adds Time Watchers to encounters, which can push it to 5.

On top of what was said, ghosts spawned from battlefields counts towards the more than 4 enemies. So, you can potentially have multiple ghosts (as many as 5 if combo'd with something like vampires), those ghosts can have ghosts, etc. It can make for some crazy fights.

I could be wrong on this but I also think 'retreating' enemies don't count, so time watchers in ch 1+ and the worms from the ruins from ch 2+ are less consistent.
I didn't know that enemies added during the encounter (ghosts) counted though, that's pretty neat.

Yup. Bats spawned from vampires (and vampire mages) also count. I would not be surprised if the tome that the vampire mages can turn into after death counts too.

can confirm the ghosts count, as does the bat swarm summoned by a vampire. Blood grove works against you in this, as it prevents the bats from being summoned and stops ghosts from forming

Feels way too rare for some drops. I finished Chapter 1 on my third loop, have almost 300 bandits killed and still not a single orb of evolution drop. I have almost like 100 of everything else, really frustrating.

Pretty sure the rare orbs only drops chapter 2 and beyond from what I notice. Got everything by Chapter 2. Drops faster too.

I was out of chapter one after the first 2-3 hours. I'm 18 hours in now and still no drops.

Did you build the Alchemist Hut already. You only need one especially its small versions to unlock both to be able to multiply. I got a few evolution orbs at chapter 2 by ratwolfs and it's Golem from Blood Groves then I multiply it. Therefore I save the ones I don't need first until I get the Alchemist. Built everything at Chapter 2 and upgraded almost all before Chapter 3. That's my strategy.

So Orb of Evolution is the Green and Orange one. You get these from "Plant" and "Living" type enemies. If you have unlocked the Supply Depot, there is an item called "Jeweler's Magnifiying Glass". It increases Rare Items drop chance by 10% for each magnifying glass.

As for the other orbs, the cool Bluish one is an Orb of Unity. It comes from defeating "Liquid" and "Swarm" type enemies. Bats, Swamp Mosquitos i think too, stuff like that.

When you unlock the Encyclopedia, it gives you info like this. You mouseover the enemy to see his type btw.
