best way to use rock/mountain? [SPOILERS]
my question is:
is it better to place rocks/mountains like this
1 2 3
4 9 5
6 7 8
do R/M tiles count after you've already placed them, or only just when placed?

for example, lets say you placed only mountains like this (with great mountain already in place)
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
would the added benefit be 100 health or 40 health or 200 health?

The answer is to build only the rocks in the 3x3 for the big mountain and to use your regular mountains to build out the corners. Rocks get a placement bonus, whereas mountains don't but get a higher "existing" bonus, so you want to convert the rocks and not the mountains. So while you're building it up, you're aiming for this:

M M_M M
M R R R M
_ R R R _
M R R R M
M M_M M

It's important you leave the center top/bottom/right/left empty so that when the setup converts, it will only take the rocks. Then you can fill in the holes with mountains.

tile effects happen while the tile is on the field, it doesnt matter what order they are placed really.

the bonuses are additive, AFAIK.

ergo your latter case would be about 120 health if all 9 tiles are mountain, assuming I've done my math correctly and your adjacency bonus is 5 health per mountain/rock - 10 for the corner mountains, 15 for the edges, and 20 for the middle one, regardless of the order placed.

tested it, this is correct. 1st mountain =+0 2nd=+10 3rd=+10 4th=+10 5th=+40 ect.
ending in 120 hp
using OPs order, i placed a R at 1 (+2), M at 5 (gives nothing), a R at 4 (gave correct bonus for adjacent), a R at 2 (correct) and now a mountain at 8, only gave 10, despite adjacent R at 4

Placed another M at 7 and only got +17, which should be +27 for the 2 M it touches (+10), the 2 M that touch it (+10), +5 for the R it touches, and +2 for the M now touching the R

i have a feeling whole blocks, IE 3x3 give correct amounts, but the order placed matters in the short term due to probably how the tiles are calc'd in the code. Diagonals seem to be sketchy

'adjacent' in this game appears to boil out to literally the four squares a given tile shares edges with in most cases.

so a mountain at 5 only gets bonus HP from mountain/rock tiles at 2, 4, 6, and 8. And the same goes for the peak (edge to edge, not corners)

i found that when they say adjacent that it means it can only be up/down/left/right, not in any corners.

rocks only = 83 health, mountains only =120

It's gotta be the 4 Cardinals, which means you'd want to make your 3x3 out of rocks, not mountains since a 3x3 of rocks is +76 and a 3x3 of mountains is 120 itself, net gain +44 using only rocks
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

This shape lends itself to building around Treasury tiles. Start with the middle row of rocks,
_____
_____
_RRR_
_____
_____
then wait for a Treasury before building out in a direction (South for the example)
_ ____
_ ____
_RRR_
_____
__T__

_____
_____
_RRR_
_RRR_
__T__
You could add mountains in before the Treasury, as long as you kept room for the the Treasury.
M___M
_ ____
_ RRR _
_ ____
M___M

If you miraculously had 4 Treasury cards before you placed your second rock, you could do it in all 4 directions.
M M T M M
M R R R M
T R R R T
M R R R M
M M T M M
