If you're not sure and want to be decent at most stuff you can go with Medic or Alch since they boost all damage. Otherwise pick whatever archetype has a damage perk that boosts whatever you want to be doing.
  • Want to shoot stuff? Gunslinger or Hunter.
  • Want to throw skills around? Engineer or Summoner.
Then find accessories that support that playstyle. The wiki has search bars on various pages allowing you to filter items by the name of mechanics.

The sparkfire shotgun is really fun so I like running Ritualist/Gunslinger for exploring levels and then swap the order for bosses. The Ritualist's prime perk is great for killing lots of weak mobs but doesn't do much VS bosses since it only boosts status damage.

Running Ritualist and Engineer with a bunch of cooldown reduction works pretty well too. The ritualist's skill 1 has a very low cooldown and does over 1k damage VS targets with at least 3 status effects. The sparkfire shotgun can apply 3 status effects on it's own with the right mod and mutator setup. Cooldown reduction also effects how often you can overclock the turret and being able to do that all the time is very powerful.

just google ritualist builds

i like mine with gunslinger cause ritualist brings in the anti mob enemies with miasma and gunslinger brings in the anti boss with its boosts and abilities. but thats not really a status build as its more focused to be good at everything (ring and amulet are mostly used for survival).

another build ive used before was with the archon as main and ritualist secondary if you have that one unlocked. worked good for status build.

Best dot damage build doesn't even need the ritualist class , and ritualist special trait that supposed to extend the duration of the status effects is actually buggy and causes problem with other trinkets , I don't think they have fixed it yet since there is no mention of it in the patch notes

You can make two different builds that I found work extremely well even in apocalypse
Toxic build :
Prefered classes :
1 Gunslinger
2 Medic
Trinkets :
- Effluvium Enhancer amulet
- Red ring of death
- Band of Fanatic
- Burden of the Destroyer
- Stone of Malevolence (very important)
Weapons :
Main : Bonesaw
mod : Corrosive Rounds
mutator : Fetid Wounds
Melee : World's edge
mod default
mutator : Tainted Blade
Side Arm : Nebula
Mod default
Mutator : Any
Recommended Traits :
Fortify 10
Regrowth 10
Swiftness 4
Vigor 10
Barksin 10
Siphoner 10
Spirit 10
Ftness 5
rest not important and spend as you like , just do not put any trait points in the Affliction !

For relic : Tranquil heart recommended , anything else would work
- Crit chance
- Mod generation
- status effect damage

this build is very fun to play and deals massive dot damage , you can apply five stacks of corrosion on anything with the help of your mods mutators and one swip of your melee cleans the entire horde in front of you , you also wont need to worry about bonesaw's painful reload cause you get your mod charge back instantly and each time activating it reloads the gun

They actually did fix the DoT problem, except for Bleed. Elemental DoTs no longer lose DPS with duration increases so running Ritualist isn't a problem anymore. Bleed however will lose DPS with increased duration. It also doesn't update its DoT ticks with reapplication after damage bonuses come into effect. You have to let it fall off entirely before refreshing it. In short, bleed sucks for damage.

Engy and ritualist both need skill damage/cooldown gear, so it work well. And soullink ring make engy undying with any archetype combination.
