the story in these games is mostly secondary, and if you don't really know what's going on, not much of it is really explained in previous games unless you dig really deep into the lore
Besides a few NPCs and thier connections theres not much you need from the first game, its basically all covered in 2 just fine.
From an immersion perspective, you're playing as a completely different character, so there isn't an expectation of a knowledge or a narrative continuity being carried over. However, there are a lot of callbacks when it comes to the lore, characters and game mechanics that you get to appreciate more if you've played the previous games.
I guess it all depends on how much those aspects of the game matter to you.
You'd Be probably able to enjoy both no matter what, but since R2 is more similar to current concepts ( Classes, builds with limited perks, more customization, etc... ) I'd go first with RftA, and then R2 ( while waiting, the might even, eventually, do something about the current new DLC bugs and the everlasting performance issues ).
Neither of the games in the series are very story driven. The main thing "Remnant: From the Ashes" (AKA Remnant 1) explains is how the evil tree monsters got to earth and why they took over. If that sounds interesting I'd just look up the logs from R1's "Subject 2923" DLC.
The story of the different worlds you'll visit is more interesting then the campaign's overarching story imo. The so called "world stories" are self-contained for the most part and aren't tied to the first game. One of the stories for "Yaesha" (the jungle world) is directly tied to Remnant 1, but you can speak to NPCs you encounter to learn more if you wish.
Gameplay wise R1 and R2 are pretty similar but R2 adds a lot more depth to character customization and is generally a bigger game in most ways.
Though if you want to just start playing from current world developed you could always go watch youtube video to catch up to remnant 2 and skip 2 games.
There is a bunch of subject logs and backstory if you wanna pick hairs. None of which is important unless you want the whole picture, but again you could go watch a few videos to catch up if you don't wanna waist the time.
I personally went and played before the ashes after remnant 1 & 2 and I am glad I did, even for the little bit of story I was missing. Totally watch a video if you don't wanna devote the time to all of it.
