I would say, it would depend on your playstyle + what you are going for in your group for a balanced team.
If you're pretty familiar with everything or will be playing in a group most of the time then I suggest picking an Archetype you like AND wipe out an acquisition path you generally DON'T like to pursue.
What I mean is that if getting the archetype or a weapons they start out with is a pain in your book then I would opt to get that for free over grinding for it later. Once you have a main archetype you like you can get all the others a lot easier as you will be playing with something you like instead of grinding hard before the game gets fun for you.

If you run hardcore I highly suggest the Handler archetype OR not playing alone if that is an option. Anything that helps you stay alive is the way to go. Survive > damage in hardcore mode.
Eugene sells 'secret' class items on all subsequent characters once unlocked on at least one. I just started a game as an Archon, and went ot Eugene. He sold the Engineer, Gunslinger, Alchemist, and Summoner items. You can buy the Medic, Handler, Challenger, and Hunter itmes form the other 4 merchants anyways, so... I can literally be -any- class from the start, and still have all classes. Nice.
