There are more bosses unreachable with melee and few bosses that went outside Challenger's Close Range passive.
But it doesn't mean melee is useless because ground enemies in Remnant 2 can be fast runners. Only Root Zombies that still slow.
I have 2 melee builds currently that can do every boss in the game. Hero's sword and crystal staff. Hero's sword is beat the game on nightmare I think. Crystal staff is in new DLC. A lot of fun. This is primarily a shooter though with melee existing as a "gtfo off me" and it works to great effect.
One build I have basically one shots anything with with 3 status effects that gets close to me. Wraithbringer from OTK DLC.
However, there are some melee weapons with charged attacks that allow them to attack at range, so it's possible to do a "melee" run of sorts if you lean into those weapons. You won't have access to those at the start of a playthrough so you'll have to make due with guns until you find one.
