You don't have to play it co-op, but you can and it's a lot of fun. It has strong souls elements, but the shooting and finding items for builds (world drops, boss rewards, puzzle rewards) are the core.

The game does borrow mechanics from Dark Souls. Chiefly the rechargeable healing item and having normal enemies respawn when you die.

The biggest difference between Remnant 2 and Dark Souls is that this game is designed around shooting things. Some enemies and bosses fly, so melee is not always an option.

If you like Dark Souls and Third Person shooters then you'll probably enjoy this game too. At it's core Remnant 2 is a tough third person shooter with a good amount of RPG mechanics behind the shooting. It's a good time if you like tight shooting and buildcrafting.

I will also recommend that you use the game's discord (or another service of your choice) to form a group. There are no restrictions on what kinds of players can join your game, so you may get some high level person who just rushes straight to the boss which ruins the experience. There is also no text chat or in-game voice chat either.

I think it does more than enough different things to not be called a ''dark souls''. The main similarity is that you can dodge things with a roll and how the checkpoints work, that's about it.

I get the point...I also say it's "kind of Dark Souls with shooting" but it's also not true.

I am a person that hates dodging (I rush in and go full offense and try to kill enemies before they can hit me) in all games where it's possible and I normally hate boss-battles.

So I love hack-and-slash games like Diablo and similar games

But Remnant 1 I actually enjoyed cause of the puzzles and exploring, there's less exploring in this game so far but I'm still enjoying it.

Play it blind as ♥♥♥♥ unless you run into a puzzle you ABSOLUTELY cannot figure out, it's much more enjoyable that way. You can always roll an "Adventure" later of that specific world to get items and other stuff too, so NBD.

In all seriousness, if what you want is play Dark Souls in co-op, just get Dark Souls Remastered.

Still, you should get Remnant 1 and if you like it and did beat it, get the sequel.
