I use it on my burden-build that does not use health - kinda fun, also the explosions are helpful with mobbing.
Power-wise the piece is mediocre of course, but so are most of the equipment in the game (aka more than half) if you compare them with meta.
The sticky micromissiles mod is very awkward to use, but it hits pretty hard if you don't let the enemy get in your face. That's where your own missiles will stagger you. It's not the best mod in the game, but it's serviceable.
Honestly, I don't know how the Anguish compares to "meta" weapons, but I thought it was pretty fun to use.
I think the quest sets up the player to have reasonable expectations which the gun itself doesn't meet. It's kind of a bummer, and an "own-goal" on Gunfire's part.
it does decent damage if you run it with Detonation Trigger and the mod recharges very fast with Archon primary class and Stone of Malevolence.
I tried running builds focused on the primary fire (charged and non-charged) but it fell flat because of the low mag size and slower reload.
I think the main problem with the gun does ranged damage, explosive damage and mod damage. No matter how you build you'll end up neglecting one of the weapon's fire modes. Considering the flavor text says the weapon "fires molten slag" I'm surprised the weapon doesn't do fire damage innately rather than just physical. That or the primary fire needs to do explosive damage too.
Yeah, I personally feel the design team tried a little too hard with this weapon. The "hold to turn shot into sticky rocket" aspect of the weapon feels very tacked on. Personally, I feel it would have done better AS the weapon's mod, rather than being attached to the end of a charged shot. That way, the explosive damage could entirely be mod damage, while the weapon's regular fire would be all regular damage.
For whatever reason, the Gunfire team like overcomplicating basic game mechanics seemingly for the sake of it.
So? Hobble on over here, because I am about to tell you how you can unleash true Anguish all over your enemies. Here is what you have to do.

With this build, Anguish's mod becomes your problem solver as soon as anything tough spawns, such as aberrations or bosses. For anything else, you use your main gun, which there are a few good options. I suggest trying them all out and choose which one you like the most. And the neat extra? It technically will run on infinite ammo while being a rapid fire gun. What's not to love?
TA is good for when you wanna play safe with others. Hits quite hard too, and I like its mod sound.
CA is stronger, but do mind that its mod will kill you and anyone else too close to an enemy. Can work in multiplayer, but only if you pay attention.
SS is your safest option, and Helix is wonderful for dealing with both strong and many enemies. Tremor, Blood Draw, Flying Bomb Trap and Rotten Arrow are of course also options, but they lack either the ability to hit flying enemies, range, or are difficult to make full use of in some cases. Still. There are more Weapon Mod options if you need them.
Oh! And if you have the scrap for it, buy some Rocket Fuel to further boost Anguish's fire rate for critical moments.
Is Anguish the best weapon in the game with this build? Probably not. But it has a DPS of about 2.4k on non weakspots and without crits, and that is absolutely shreds big bosses, regardless of their difficulty level.
