Hunter/Gunslinger has no downsides when it comes to fighting anything. including bosses.
summoner is garbage against bosses. (see also what i said about archon)
engineer's heavy weapon has too little ammo so you spam hearts to maintain its ammo but you have to plant or stow heavy weapon. also completely dependant on skill cooldown.
archon has crazy mod power regen and mod damage buffs but too many mods either have ridiculous FF damage or just dont deal the kind of damage 1 weakspot shot deals with hugs.
its not some kind of secret. hugs requires so little investment to out do every other class in damage.
I would recommand trying a RIGS build instead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRJGPFbgg0o
For engineer you can try something called red firestarter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7BUsytpEQE
But i am really waiting for the next patch to see if they fix dots and ritualist:(
In the end all boils down to the individual. As long as you enjoy your game and your enjoyment is not in the cost of others', youre fine.
Now, I do have a HUGS build which I use fairly often, but the only reason I can make it work is because I've put almost everything else into shield-spamming, which means that I'm rather mediocre when it comes to the thing that archetype combination is supposed to excel at. On the other hand, on my current Apocalypse run, I can take a fair amount of punishment, even from bosses, and I've rarely been 1-shot, which is not bad for medium encumbrance armor.
i didnt at any point say they take no investment. ive also not said anything about defense. ive specifically said damage. the fact is, it takes less investment than every other damage class/combo.
no matter how tanky engineer, summoner, or challenger is, they all require heavy investment to even match hunter/gunslingers "DAMAGE".
the reason people see so many of this combination is because of how easy it is to build and play.
when all you see is this combination (like its the only one in the game), id say its time for a re-balance.
Granted its one of really good builds.
Bottom line.....why would anyone care who likes / hates which builds? In the end its all personal preference to what people like to play.
I didn't start using Gunslinger until after I found more gear that either provided or benefited from shields, and even then, it was mostly as a way to offset the constant and slow reload speed of using double dual-action guns.
So I guess I kind of went against the trend on that one.
Well, I didn't say that you said what you didn't say either; I just had my own thing to say, even if I added it to what you said.
In all build varieties, just "Gun shoot hard" is probably least interesting.
Having simply fun and gameplay optimized for your playstyle is best kind of fun.
As a HU-GS/HU-INV I just like staying back — lowers the target area. =P
Some people enjoy the simple things and/or non-magic stuff. =D
