essentially....whichever one works for you. All archetypes combinations are perfectly viable.

Early on, I think you're going to get the most out of Hunter / Medic. The Challenger's damage perk increases damage by up to 35%, but it only works fully when in close quarters, whereas the Medic, while it caps out at 25%, it applies to all damage at any range.

Of the initially available archetypes, the Handler is also a good fit, although you would probably be better off, selecting it as the primary one instead.

Of course, as someone previously mentioned:

It all comes down to what kind build you're going for.

I went Hunter/Handler for the taunt from the pet and also the very minor constant heal once you get some levels (if you get hit by a standard enemy or elevated one, it can top you off versus having to heal otherwise).

im playing around with hunter/handler and it's working good for me i've got +50% ranged damage without having to do anything with the dog being like half of that lol.

i started on nightmare and decided to go hunter/challenger for the tankyness and bullwark as well as rampage to up damage i found that there is alot of skills and perks that either mitigate damage or add more damage. So far its been working quite well will probably go hunter gunslinger when i unlock gunslinger tho
Gunslinger goes very well

Invader/hunter, hunter/gunslinger, hunter/alchemist, hunter/medic and hunter/engineer are all really good together

Make sure you exhaust all of mudtooths storytelling dialogue before rerolling! Did that one time and had to speedrun through the game to unlock it lol
Summoner/medic is pretty good from what I have played. You keep your minions healed and the mobs don't always focus you.

In order of value. Mind you I'm writting the numbers from memory so if anyone notices a mistake do correct me, and I'm going to assume you care about DPS above all since that's what matters most on max difficulty.

Gunslinger is a no brainer but you mentionned you don't have it yet. Hunter/Gunslinger is notorious for being the best offensive class combo in the game, by far.

Challenger if you use shotguns or other close range weapons like flamethrowers. 35 % damage boost, 10 % crit chance but you need to be somewhat close (10 meters is plenty, in truth). On top of that you have Rampage, an ability which will just make you shoot your weapon faster and harder for a little while.

Invader if you use weapons with a low magazine like the Coach Gun or Sporebloom to keep the damage buff up easily. 35 % damage boost, 5 % crit chance. Shoot > Reload > While reloading sprint or dodge to refresh the 15 second timer for your damage boost > Repeat.

Alchemist if you want a generalist offensive support class with a 25 % damage boost and 5 % crit chance on top on one ability that boot fire rate. Medic has the same passive offensive buffs but has no offensive abilities, only really valuable in coop where it can really shine.

Explorer works but it's a bit slow. You get get a 35 % damage increase after using a relic, and 15 % more if you dig your offensive buff. But which buff you dig is random, and the animation is slow. Like medic you'll get more value out of this one in coop.

There's a point to be made with Ritualist but it's niche. The class has a 20 % damage boost and 10 % crit chance against targets with maluses. Most importantly, if you have the Ahanae Ring (hardcore ring), you can use Miasma and have a multiplicative, 25 % damage boost against your target, so you're making use of one of the highest damage increase in the game. Still, despite this, it's too reliant on Miasma to have a good, constant DPS which ends up being really not that great.

These are the only classes you should consider if your plan is to make your guns shoot harder and nothing else.
