The general idea is that there is always something to replay for. Sometimes its more egregious than other times, but in general there is always going to be something new that can pop up because you explored thoroughly, backtracked, or got lucky with world gen.
The good news here is that unlike some of the key item conversions, the red prince:fae council interactions are NOT world gen locked. So long as you first get the fae council and get the knife from Nimue instead of finishing the quest, you can take the dagger into ANY red prince event (technically, there are TWO events, but both are identical outside of the DLC which provides a unique ending... spoilers) and get the crown. WARNING, you DO have to land the final hit with the dagger but otherwise, you can fight him with anything.
