Is multiplayer dangerous?
I'm looking at negative reviews and I'm seeing mentions of players with mods or hacks ruining the game for you, or even breaking your game. i'm also seeing something about how its possible to accidentally join a mod server and it'll mess you up too.

To me? Multiplayer no longer exists in this game, I'm not touching it. I'm not paying money for someone else to blow up my game somehow. How serious is this issue and what can I do to protect myself?

If you say "play with friends" none of them are interested in shooting games like this, so if that's the answer i simply won't bother picking this up even if it is 40% off right now

No it isnt as bad as some of those big whiny babies just looking for an excuse to hate the game. Sure there will be a rare chance someone wants to turn ur pc into a nuke, but that's like all MP games. I played a good amount of multiplayer and I haven't run into anyone using mods (That I knew of) If you're so worried about people modding and having their own type of fun, just don't play multiplayer. Beat the game and then do mp if you want, or leave if you notice something weird is going on with the game. Better yet, host your own lobby because as far as im aware the majority of impactful mods only work when the host has the mod

You could also use the official discord to find like minded players and it would allow you to actually speak to them while playing.

no game breaking , worst case scenario is that you get all items from someone, ruining your save is not possible.

I live in New Zealand and I've joined enough game discords to know that no one is ever around in my discord. I've never joined an official discord and gotten a multiplayer match out of it in my life. If that's what I need to find a game then yeah naw, the game might as well only have single player as far as I'm concerned.

...so how's the single player experience? The game looks like it's clearly aimed at a full party. Does it scale down to make it manageable for a single person? Or is it one of those things were people go "Yeah it's doable solo. It's just that every boss fight takes 15 hours because it's expecting the DPS of 3 more people. Also never get hit because its expecting you to be able to heal each other. That means its very technically in a literal sense doable solo"

Not sure how you concluded that, but that is not nearly true. I mean playing in a party is nice, but you can just as well do it alone.

DPS-wise the game scales decently well into parties, so I don't think party has that much DPS-advantage in terms of relative damage (because boss health goes up a lot).

Party is easier though, but that just thanks to the fact that party members can res each other and rotate defensive utilities with little to no downtime on them.
^
But all of that is not really necessary because there is difficulty slider with lowest settings being rather easy solo anyway.

At the start, when learning things, bosses can feel like they take forever, but it's really only like a minute or two. Once you get things down and get an actual build going, it can range from obnoxiously easy on the easiest difficulty, to a harsh but doable challenge on the hardest.

I haven't experienced any of those issues but you will get killed by some d!ck shooting you with witchfire every five minutes.

Since release, i'm joining a lot and i mean A LOT of random games. I have rarely encountered obvious cheaters. From the top of my head.. i can remember one. I have never gotten anything out of the blue or anything strange, wild or otherwise unusual that would have "destroyed" my game in any form or way.

But.. I feel you. I have heard similar rumors since the trait point unlock modders.

To be sure, you could simply run some save file backups.

They are easy enough to find under:

User > [Your username] > Saved Games > Remnant 2

Have fun!

P.S.:

I've played through it all (difficulty settings included). Solo and in co-op. The game is a blast, no matter what.

The game is honestly fine solo. Most of my 200+ hours were spent solo. And even if no one in your friend group enjoy's this sort of game the Remnant Discord has LFG channels where you can find folks to play with. The best multiplayer experience in ANY souls-like always comes from forming your own group rather than praying you get good randoms to run with.

Regarding people screwing up your save just be proactive in backing up your save and if something happens, load the backup.

There's even a 3rd party tool that makes it very easy to backup and load saves. You can setup timed backups if you want too.

Literally the first time I joined a multiplayer game out of curiosity the guy was modded and instantly boosted all my equipped skills/jobs to 10 and gave me tons of free items. Thankfully you can delete your current save and restore an older from backup so that fixed that, but never again

I joined a multiplayer game and the guy gave me the invader archetype item. So I would not call it ruined my game but definitely there is people giving stuff out there

Wtf this happened to me today when I decided to make my game joinable to the public FOR THE FIRST TIME.

A dude joined my game, shot me with some gravity beam, then the firestorm mod, and killed me. Then he killed me again immediately after we respawned.

This never happened once in my entire 80 hours with the PS5 version, yet happened with my very first random on PC. You can't make this stuff up.

God I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate PC gaming sometimes.

This is pretty much game breaking. If you have all items, what's the incentive to keep playing? A big part of the fun is doing the work to get the items, so I would say jumping into a game and getting everything would break that experience.

theory crafting, challange completion , random events , unfinished progress completion , looting is only a part of this game , but i understand that looting can affect your experience

Looting isn't just "only" a part of the game. It's arguably the most important part lol.
