80gb of storage
It is almost as if the art of making good video games is a lost art.

Don't get me wrong, I got the space. I can definitely cover that. But that is not the point. A huge game file size means they don't know how to respect the customer's hardware. Just because all the space in the world is available does not give you the right to use it all. Make it smaller.

The fact the file size is so big is an indicator that trouble lies ahead.

Seriously; something that can bloat a game like that is sound. But. To justify that 80gb file size, this game would have to have the best sound of any game ever made. Licensed full tracks being streamed to your ears uncompressed. With the most accurate sound effects any game has ever used. Millions and millions of dialogue lines; the deepest story ever told.

Do you see ANY of that happening? I don't. If you ask me right now; I have to say that such a thing is absolutely impossible.

This means the only other explanation can be; they don't know how to make a game well.

Remnant: From the Ashes, to Remnant II. To justify that 80gb file size, the improvement from one game to the next would have to be astronomical; unprecedented in all of gaming history. Potentially even historical. A 400% improvement from one game to the next is unthinkable. Especially given how the first game did not make them hundreds of millions of dollars, to pay for the increase.

If I am you; I approach this one with SUPER low expectations.

Plenty of games these days are huge as ♥♥♥♥ and to me it gets annoying because I would probably had to spend like 20 hours to download it while praying it'll be good. I understand why they get bigger after all things like textures, sounds and scripts or whatever weigh something but it is annoying to see almost all of the games weigh from 80 to 200 gb. This is the reason why I didnt played ARK yet or Conan; you have to download hunderds of GB. No thank you

Well, visual assets do get bigger with time, as fidelity increases. And we are fully on a new generation of consoles/games now.

That being said, Total Warhammer 2, for example, has this issue where it downloads all language localization audio files, and after installation you can delete all but English ones to free 20+ GB of space. So might be onto something here.

We need modular installs. I think people on 1080p screens might opt to skip Ultra/4K texture packs, seeing as they also might require more than 8GB of VRAM.

Edit: I am very sceptical of these posted requirements. With RTX 2060, the recommended hardware will probably only serve Medium/1080p/60FPS, maybe High with DLSS.

You should't base whether or not a game will work on it's size. Especially since some of that size van be languages. They might have been trying to make this game bigger than the last game. They also stayed with UE4 apparently which they have a lot of experience with now.

Don't tell OP that the majority of a games file size is textures.

Yeah people forget that everything you see needs a texture and the higher quality a texture is the more space it takes up

Like others have said huge file sizes are a side effect of the times and hardware. People push 4k screens these days and expect textures to look good, 4K textures are huge. Sound is another problem, but it isn't the quality of the audio. Sure that's part of it but they've been using high quality audio in games for years now. It's about how many languages the game is supporting, every language supported means another full set of audio files, that adds up really fast.

That’s like 10-20 min to download

Whenever I read a thread like this, I can never tell whether to feel cringe or pity the fact that a human like this actually exists out there.

High resolution textures cause this. It's inevitable. Stupid post.

I honestly just assumed this was a troll post. Judging a game's merit by its file size as some kind of spooky predictor of its quality is ludicrous.

How does an inaccurate sound effect differ from a sound effect that is accurate if they share the same bit depth/channel size? You know nothing about sound and how easily compressed it can be. Sound can be compressed and lossless at the same time.

They should have taken Deep Rock Galactic as an example with entire game being 3 Gb

80gb is nothing. Delete all the OnlyFans pictures you have stored on your PC and you will be fine.
