How do I use lifesteal?
Is it a trait or I need some kind of equipment?

Deal damage with the source that is mentioned, and you get life back. If nothing specific is mentioned, then all damage will life steal.

I don't know what source though. Reason I ask is I just got the Siphoner trait.

Siphoner is all damage

Siphoner lists no specific source, so any damage will work.

lifesteal if just put in lifesteal is any and all damage you do, minions, ranged, melee, mods.
Only important things to know if that the minion get their lifesteal applied when they spawn, if u have the 10% lifesteal relic it wont give them lifesteal if they are already alive, but if you use the relic and spawn the summoner minions/turret after they get the lifesteal applied to them.

The big qualifying word is "base;” its all base damage done. So if you're using ranged damage and hit a huge 5k crit you don't get 3% of that crit, you get 3% of the base shot prior to multipliers.

Is Siphoner worth maxing out?

For a lifesteal build, yes.
Otherwise, it's 3% of all kind of damage you do, so stacking debuffs on enemies can give you a little more healing in a pinch.

Its all damage sources, including damage over time.

3% of 1k still sounds pretty nice for me.didn't try yet though

That's the thing. Base damage is unaltered damage from a level 0 weapon. There is nothing even close to 1k base damage.

The weapon with the highest base damage, to my knowledge, is the Sporeshot at 200 base damage. That means 3% lifesteal gives you a grand total of 6 health per shot.

Shoot a target in the chest at level 0 for 200 damage: 6 healing. Shoot a target in the face at level 20 for 3k+: 6 healing.

lifesteal even only 3% is very strong. getting hit and lets say 30% damage. a few seconds constant dps and you are back full. i would say its a must have for any build unless you play some sort of buff stacking and never get hit play perfect kinda build. and since you can respec trait points infinitly just test it and see for yourself. people that mastered this game propably wont need it and it be a waste of points but for anyone still learning the game its imho a must. and no matter how its calculated. most people only have around 130 hp. a few hp per hit is alot

Are you sure that base damage doesn't account for weapon upgrades? It was my impression that it disregarded body part modifiers and damage buffs (and potentially armour + debuffs?), but not weapon upgrades. It seems like those upgrades are baked into the weapon's actual stats, rather than applied as a buff.

Yep, I actually tested it just before posting my response. I used a level 20 sporeshot, which has a damage of 600. After damaging myself down to around half health, I proceeded to fire at a target dummy. It took 9 shots to fully heal myself, which with 3% lifesteal at the base 200 damage, would be 6 health restored per shot.

If weapon level affected the lifesteal amount, then I would heal for triple the amount, since the damage of the weapon is triple at max level. If 3% lifesteal of 600 is 18, then I should be able to heal half my health in just 3 shots, which is not the case.

Well, thanks for the heads-up, then. This is quite odd, since weapons don't actually display their "base" damage anywhere in the game. Not after you've upgraded them.
