Basically as soon as you complete the tutorial, you can choose to join a world at random, and you are given access to like...10-15 different games you can join that are about your "power" level.
Not sure how it works for friends, as I don't have friends on steam that actively play Remnant 2.
which in this kind of souls like game were timing is so important it kind of hurts the experience, for me at least. usually ill have to leave the game until i find someone with a decent connection. I don't know why they did not do dedicated servers. I feel the player base is big enough to warrant hosting some servers.
I always toggle my flashlight at spawn to check connection. then i leave if its real bad.
