Is Challenger a playable archtype,
As Challenger a close range specialist, but this game made close quarter combat unplayable, due the the problem of doging hitbox very unintuitive, i often dodge in another direction, the attacks still hits.
Another point is the close quater point of view, makes this specialist can't see anything to obtain information to react.
Moreover, the powerful melee has the lowest priority to hit enemy. which make me feels i chosen a trash archtype as a starting point.

20 meters for Challenger passive is pretty much the intended range for assault rifles.
And a lot of the bosses have openings where they have just slammed/overextended next to you.

Challenger is quite viable, also you have a death save that helps with the loss of potential ranged damage.

So, the melee range and shotgun is useless weapon for challenger?

It is when you have 80% DR and multiple ways to regain health. Playing full melee isn't really viable though because of boss design and flying enemies.

Starting with Challenger is not great. You have all the negatives of close combat and none of the positives, like being tanky. I also think Challenger needs some stagger resistance built into them because it's easy to get stagger locked sometimes.

absolutely not.

challenger is actually super good, if you go shield rings and regen off shield in heavy armor you can viably tank hits super hard and still be mid rolling, almost removes the need for outside healing most of the game. some fights i only used a heal or two while just man fighting the boss in melee with the juggernaut ability, carried me 80% of the game. (this was in veteran mode, preformance may very in nightmare+)

It is because from remenant 1, every thing it does is intuitive, but in remnant 2, every things feeling different, in dodging, everytime i dodge away, the attack still hits me, also in terms of tanky, challenger makes it feel useless, cuz as dodging become useless, everything hits him, makes him like a billboard.

It's better to try iframe attacks with proper timing instead of trying to avoid them. But, yeh, the enemy melee attacks that seem to "home in" on you are ridiculous and bad/cheap design.

maybe starting with challenger from level 1 is the problem for me, thanks. I might try to continue with this archtype without proper build/

Not trash by any means, pretty good actually. The automatic shotgun is also very strong. You can get used to playing close range, but a lot of the time you are forced to anyway.

As someone who mains the default shotgun and double barrel as a sidearm: absolutely not!

I beat it with a challenger/engineer combo using the starting challenger weapon. Now I'm trying a new campaign and sure do miss the extra life and heavy armor!

Yo King, do you use the range boost rings to deal with bosses, or do you really just have huge balls and get up in their grills?

As long you fight melee enemies, it's viable and potentially very strong with the right setup. (For example slowing enemies in a fairly decent area with Dreamcatcher and going all out on them with Juggernaut activated as they become very slow and a lot more predictable for a few seconds.)
Just swap to your guns for aerial enemies or those pesky gunner enemies that tend to run away when you get close.

Or you could still keep melee focused rings/amulet and get a melee weapon that can be thrown or one that send projectiles with charged attacks.

I also use the starting shotgun and I get in their faces. I use the longshot trait too though.
