I played through as medic primary (no secondary for the majority of my first run through on survivor difficulty).
though in the end with the amount of other healing sources i never really benefited from the medics passive or abilities and forgot to use them most of the time xD

Engineer makes fights easy. Throw down the turret, set it to 11, go hide. Pair it with a survival class like medic and GG. Or add dog/summoner and use all the summon friendly goodies.

I started as medic, but picked up engineer pretty early and never looked back.

Handler and Medic are both very forgiving to start with.
Engineer is awesome but you can't get that right away. That turret is the real hero. Also the Dog.

All are viable imho. But Handler with Medic or Summoner is easiest one for Solo I think. The Dog draws attention of Mobs and can revive you if Hearts aviable, the Medic grants more Heal and Survivability or with the Summonner go full Pet Build.

depends on the area youre in and what youre trying to accomplish. There is no 1 size fits all in my opinion. Need to survive a bunch of mobs in losomn while running around looking for items, handler/medic, need to DPS a boss, gunslinger/hunter, exploring N'erud for the engineer class, handler/explorer. I've personally been using gunslinger/hunter about 80 percent of the time and if i find im getting hit too much and still want to maintain damage, but want to survive a bit more, gunslinger/invader or gunslinger/handler for the passive heal as well as the good boy distracting some of the mobs for me. I however really just enjoy glass cannon builds for the most part, however i understand that that might not be everyones preferred playstyle.

I've been using Hunter on Veteran - Really enjoyed it.
Dual classed now with Alchemist.

Been using gunslinger. Super smooth with the instant reload on skill use. But for non pre orders medic or handler seem to be the best. Honestly all the archetypes are good solo. You can choose a second archetype later on so don't worry about it to much.

if you really want to be tanky do challenger/tank & medic with shield probably

Handler/Summoner
your minion(s) keep the aggro away from you (mostly)

Starting it's challenger imo, as I really benefited from the once a fight self-revive and it let me succeed in a lot of boss fights.

The handler is pretty good too.

After you get unlocks summoner is a fantastic solo, especially handler/summoner in that order, as you have the dog to revive you, minions to dps and draw aggro, and can get life-steal and damage mitigation (you push up to 10% of damage suffered onto minions instead) and effectively gain a great deal of durability.

Unsaid by many is that medic/summoner is also fantastic, as you can heal your summons to build charge on your healing effect to regain relic uses. (Edit: i am pretty sure you can but haven't tested this extensively, still healing them is useful in and of itself)

I started with gunslinger then Gunslinger-Handler, then later switched gunslinger-Hunter and now main gunslinger but secondary I alternate between summoner / engineer
