Do i need an ubisoft account to play the game?

I just bought the game and haven't played it yet because i need to register in the ubisoft launcher. Is this the only way to play the game because if so i will return it.

When I first purchased the game, no log-in was required.
By the time Ubisoft changed the rules, it was too late for me to get a refund.
