Tax revenue
I made a spreadsheet during one game to track per capita revenue from taxes from various classes under various conditions.

As expected, income per capita is higher from patricians than citizens, and higher from noblemen than patricians. But I was surprised to see that the highest revenue per capita of all comes from peasants! When you upgrade your city, revenue does increase, but this is due more to higher population than higher revenue per capita.

Revenue also increases as you meet the needs of your population for drink, clothing, etc. It's worth doing. Buildings such as taverns and churches are necessary to advance but increase revenue directly very little if at all.

Per capita revenue from nomads and envoys is somewhat lower than from occidentals. The real benefit of building up your oriental population comes from enabling you to manufacture carpets, coffee, and pearl jewelry, which produce great income from trading once you have managed to build the infrastructure up as much as you can.

yea its a good idea to make a bunch of small islands with basic populations if you want to make a ton of cash, i would actualy advice nomads over peasants though, becouse nomad houses dont spontaniusly combust or catch whatever plague is relevant at the moment. and theres always plenty of space in the orient if your main island is occidental. the only real problem is that date plantations cost a lot of upkeep. sandstorms can be survived easily with filled warehouses though thunderstorms and tornados are as always a pain.
