When active, the Friend Pass allowed a player who owned the game to complete a full playthrough with a player who didn't. The game-owning player would give their chosen partner the key associated with the Friend Pass, which the partner would then redeem on their own Steam account in order to install the Friend Pass game version. This could then be launched and used to connect with the game-owning player and complete a playthrough of the game over as many sessions as desired.
