are you supposed to be able to see your aircraft or enemy ships? Especially when attacking.

Yes. Click the tiny arrow on the left of the screen to open the unit list, then expand the tree of units and click on a ship or aircraft to centre it in your view.

i got air units to work. had to be on them b4 i switchedt to 3d, but the contacts button isnt highlighted for enemy
